Looking in owners manual the other day, I was somewhat amazed to find that my 5-speed gearbox takes mercon. Anyone done their own fluid swap? Is there a site with pics showing how to do it. I don't want to pay $90+ that Ford want to screw mefor doing it. It can't be that difficult.........can it?

Mercon is the correct fluid.

Various manuals will say you never need to change your tranny fluid. I change mine once every couple of years just for insurance and to check for metal fines. Changing the tranny fluid is not difficult to do; it just takes a bit of time and the fill location is awkward.

You may or may not have a drain plug. If not, you'll have to painstakingly remove the old fluid through your speedo connection via a hand suction pump. I use 1 L pop bottles to pump the old fluid into (they fit in the engine compartment nicely.

You definitely have to refill via the speedo connection. Get yourself a handpump that scews right on to the tranny fluid bottle and you'll be fine. I think the capacity is just under 3 L.

It might be a bit messy, that's all.
