On my '91 EGT fan belt squeals on starting up first thing then just slight noise through the day
have adjusted it and sprayed but still happens
now i'm starting to think it's the alternator pulley that squeals
which one do you think is correct? thanks dave

have replaced the belt and alternator in the past year

Best way to figure it out is take the belt off and spin the pulleys by hand.

Thanks, i'll try to check that out...my mechanic tells me it;s the belt where the sound comes from slipping

What did you spray the belt with?
In my experience belt dressing works for only a short time before the squeal reappears.

yea, it was belt dressing

On the '56 I rubbed the belt with a bar of soap. I'll be trying it out on Mr. White in Spring. His belt has squeaked since the A/C compressor was replaced 2 years ago.

I would think it's better on the inside of the belt? or does it matter? thanks

On the '56 the sides as the inside does not contact the pully. For the Escort's serpentine belt I'd guess all over to be sure. But now that you mentioned it I think I'll experiment with that and try one side at a time. Right now there is still salt on the roads so Mr. White will stay parked a little longer
