Because I have five cars with the same part; a part that is over 20 years old.
I get that, but never heard of them going bad on these cars. I am having trouble believing that there is something unique to these cars about them that you couldn't use one from a not Escort somehow.
The second gen flashers were more widely used than the third gen but they're still not as easy to get as you might think. You can't just go to Auto zone and buy a Ford escort flasher unit, and the canister flashers of the eighties and earlier don't fit. Our cars borrowed heavily on the Mazda influence, Especially where wiring is concerned. There's nothing 'unique' about the way these cars were made, and you're correct that this part rarely fails, however flashers are becoming impossible to find at the parts counter. i.e. the op getting one labeled for a pickup and not his escort. I went to a number of parts counters looking for a flasher for my third gen just to be told "yeah we have that, right here on the shelf" as they tried to sell me a canister flasher. Fortunately I already knew what I was looking for before I went.
The pictures below are of flashers used in second and third gen escorts.
The three pin flasher is early second gen.
The 5pin unit is a 94↑ second gen.
The third is a multi pin unit used in third gens, there's two different versions of this flasher, one sedans and wagons and one for zx2 cars.

I have already had the disappointment of having had a flat in Birmingham AL on my 94LX wagon: And going to a franchise tire store, only to be told they didnt have any 13" or 14" tires. None. They pointed me to a re-purposed gas station half a mile away that was now a "used tire store", run by Koreans. They had the used 14" tire I needed for $15. It had good tread and its date code was only 3 years old.
Here in the RioGrande Valley, if I want a tire or two for my Escorts, I have to tell them a couple of days ahead, so they can order them in. The used tire places dont have 13's pr 14' either.
So any part for my Escorts that -doesnt fail- very often, may be the exact one that is hard to find.
I think that the only reason you can still get a 14" tire for these cars locally is because the Corolla used to use the same tire. My local Walmart stocks them.
