Well, I finally found my girlfriend a car! It's a 1996 LX 2dr hatch with 138xxx miles. Options include tilt wheel, power mirrors, rear defrost, spoiler, a/c, power steering, and factory tach. We are paying $800.

The good: The interior is in awesome condition. It's the standard grey cloth LX interior, all stock. The engine is a little dirty but nice and smooth and quiet. The 5-speed shifts very smoothly and the shifter bushings are nice and tight. Brand new Firestone tires, good brakes (non-ABS), and it just passed PA inspection this month. Underneath, the body is nice and clean and almost rust-free (with the exception of underneath the hatch area).

The bad: It has been painted bright orange (a HORRID paint job - I could do better with spray paint) but it used to be white like mine. There are some dents, some dumb-looking skull graphics all over the car (hopefully they'll come off), a generic cone air filter, and a rice muffler. There are several very thin spots of metal in the hatch area, but nothing I can't fix.

Here are several pics. We will actually be picking the car up next Saturday.

Notice somebody's attempt at repairing the rear wheel well. The front fender is also pushed in where it meets the rocker.

Ugly skull graphics and muffler.

Dents in front fender and passenger door.

Very nice and clean interior.

Factory tach.

I'm not sure what we're going to do about the botched body work and paint yet. Her dad does paint and body work for a living, so he should be able to restore it eventually. We both can't wait to go pick it up and start customising it to her liking.

This car won't get modded like mine, but I'll likely be doing most of the repairs.

Comments welcome!

hell, $800 for a car with a current PA inspection is a steal! It's a nice looking car body wise... definitely ditch the graphics though. I'd say get her dad to paint it up, and be done with it. Nice find!

Yeah, I think we got a really good deal. The guy wanted $1000 (or $1200 with the audio system left in) but we settled on $800 because of the rust in the hatch area that he didn't know about because he "never even lifted up the carpet back there" lol.

The owner had only had the car for about 8 months, and his only reason for selling was that he needed a bigger car (he was a big dude and looked hilarious sitting in this car).

I hope we can get the body work and paint straightened out too. It shouldn't be too bad considering we have a professional on our side. I keep trying to convince her that white is the best colour but she wants it to be orange or purple when all is said and done.

The skulls are pretty retarded looking, but we aren't going to rip them off the body until we have the paint shop scheduled. I know for sure that the orange paint will pull off with the decals.

The reason I say "we" is because I'm actually the one buying it and doing the majority of the work and maintenance (except the tricky body work). It's technically my car until she pays me back for it and we agreed to do the title solely in my name. She just has to say "ooh my car is pretty" lol.

So as of next Saturday, my name can be added to the list of people who are proud owners of multiple Escorts.

Yeah, I don't think the orange colour looks too bad either. Who knows what she'll actually want to do with it though.

No real updates here since we haven't picked it up yet... but I plan to keep a progress/updates thread for this car too.

The first thing we're going to do is get rid of the graphics from the windows, and see if they will come off the body. The driver side taillight has a minor crack in it, but the spares I have are the early style.

It will also need minor interior parts from the junkyard such as the "loops" that the seat belts fit through on the front seats, the little plastic handles for the seat tilt lever on the driver side, a cover for the clutch pedal, and who know what else.

I'll keep everybody updated.

That speedo looks wrong for a '96.
IIRC, in '95 and '96, the odometer has the 6+1 arrangement that rolls over at a million miles.

Otherwise, if it runs good, it is good, and I wish you good luck with it.... :)

Haha no LX-e for her. Slow is the goal here.

I was kinda hoping for like, a 1st gen LX w/ slushbox so that it would have a hard time getting out of its own way but this should be ok for her.

I don't know about the odometer thing. That had crossed my mind when I looked at the car but I thought that maybe the 6+1 was an option and the 5+1 was still standard equipment for the LX.

We're pretty psyched to go get it though.

hehehe, good catch... that is an early 90's gauge cluster, or at least speedo/odo. All 94-96 clusters had the 6th digit stock.

Hmm, interesting.

One thing I neglected to do when I was there looking at the car was compare the mileage on the cluster to the mileage on the title. I wish I had a CarFax account so I could look up its history.

But even if it has been tampered with, an $800 car is an $800 car. The interior and underside look about right for 138,xxx anyway.

well, the tach is definitely 94-up... so I am guessing that just the speedo/odo was swapped

Yeah... one thing about being in PA is that the car is mileage-exempt anyway. The State could care less what mileage we put on the title.

When I sold my Mazda, I was trying to remember the mileage and the guy behind the counter was like, meh the thing is too old for it to matter and he wrote EXEMPT on the title LOL

If the graphics come off in one piece mail them to me. I'll Scotch tape them on my kid's Jeep Grand Chepowaawaa when he isn't looking! 8O

Picked it up this morning, and started cleaning it up while she was at work. Washed the exterior, cleaned the wheels, tires, interior, windows, and engine bay.

Also put the stock airbox back in with a new filter and cleaned the MAF sensor.

Here in a bit I'm going to go back out and change the oil.

I'm pretty sure it needs a clutch master cylinder though. That will be a project for tomorrow. I'm hoping it's the master and not a bent fork or something serious.

After:

And I noticed that this makes contact when the hood is open.
