hey, whats up?
when i said newcomer, i meant in the escort world...i have fair knowlege of what to do and what not to do when it comes to cars, but the info i have mostly pertains to imports...
anyway, i just bought a 92 2 door lx from my dad, and all i want to do is get the power up around 130-140, and make it handle like an IT-spec miata. what should i do first? :?:

130-140HP??? thats gunna be kinda difficult but can be done. I would start off with:
exhaust (1st generation gt header, 2 1/4" catback, and a muffler)
Intake (ebay, $15)
1st generation GT cam
and some others...

or you could swap a 2.0 in and start off with 110...

hope this helps.

yeah, that helps some...
i thought about doing the 2.0 swap, but i'm also very concerned with weight distribution. ill probably relocate the battery to the back, swap the hood, take out the a/c...things like that.
whats the weight difference between the two motors?
if i could do the swap & maintain a decent ratio. id consider it

yeah!

if you go to a spi 2.0 its the same block, juist longer stoke on the pistons, and diffretn fuel injection on top. but the main block bolts in, it been done! and yes you go from 88hp at flywheel, to 110 at flywheel, you can find the motors cheap! you can go to a 2gen base pony model and get the sterring rack and loose the power steering, and gaind a few pounds off there also!

the GT has a 1.8L "BP" motor. Same motor that is in the Miata. Except a few minor things.

The 2.0SPI would be a very good starting place. You mention handling as well.. Make sure this swap is legal with any racing bodies you may be interested in going with.

My H&R springs, Tokico S/R shocks and 1" rear Quickor swaybar (from Bare End) sure make backroads fun... my friend got a little upset when I told him his WRX feels kinda like a caddilac after driving my escort (He let me take it for a spin around the autocross track on Sunday, and I let him drive my car around the track.. he got about the same time in my car after 1 lap around the course that he got for the best time in his car out of 4 laps around the course... what does that tell you?*) Oh, and I beat a guys street prep miata by 3/10 sec  That felt good.

It's still comfortable on long trips and my daily commute. I highly reccomend this setup, or the same w/ Ground-Control coil-overs. (I'm also running Energy Supension front control arm bushings, steering rack bushings and 16x7 Rota Slipstreams wrapped in Sumitomo HTRZ IIs)

*I also beat his best time driving his car.. (for my first time behind the wheel of a WRX ever) .. I think he may have been a little upset about that :D

Hey G'luck with your aspirations (haha pun  )

Anyhow, anyone else on here could tell you what my theory on attaining higher HP levels...but to all his own. The body style is a good build up platform, and starting with the 1.9L the advice on here so far is right...go up to the 2.0L Probably the best trend with keeping it realistic and simple.

g'luck, and welcome to the site! 8)
