Getting ready to buy a 95 escort hatchback (LX) that has 173k mile on it. Car has had alot done to it and sounds good in general. It's for my 16 yr old son as a first car and has spoilers side shirting kit cat back exhaust CAI nice wheels etc. My main concern before I buy is 173k miles? What should I look for in my test drive tomorrow? Other than the obvious and I'm car technical for the most part but not on these 1.9 Fords. It has a check engine light but the owner says it started after she put on the after market air intake.

I'm going to run it buy an Autozone tomorrow to check the codes and how will I tell if the clutch is good also on the 5 speed. Sorry lots of questions but want a general opinion on a car with this many miles??

It all depends on how well it was taken care of. My blue car had 151k miles on it when I pulled the 1.9L, and it still ran like a champ. Only issue it had was the rear main seal had a small leak.

Ask for any service records, see how many miles are on the timing belt, water pump, clutch, etc. Check inside the rear wheel wells for rust, as well as the right jack well in the right rear of the trunk. 173k miles is a decent amount, but for the age of the car, it's not bad. If the engine pops down the road, there are plenty of spare 1.9L engines in the junk yards.

thanks but I was hoping we could drive it for 30 - 50k miles with no real issues just minor maintenance stuff. I certainly wasn't thinking I may have to replace the motor I imagine thats an expensive job??

just look for the milage thread. There are tons of people on here that took their 1.9L engines well over 200k. As long as the car is in good shape and your son takes care of it, it should last.
