like i said im new to the forum. my name is Tom btw. i have a few questions about upgrading. i used the search feature already, but have come up empty handed or my question was posted and never answered.

little backround

93 LX Sedan ATX(MTX swap soon). ive owned it for about 3 years. i did the basics: pacesetter header/full exhaust no cat. bigger intake pipe(relocated battery) and tried several different intake filter set-ups. i finally settled on a stock box(K&N filter) with no bottom. i took my dremel to the tb and maf. now i come to the intake manifold and the question.

is their a better one out there(intake manifold)??? or should i just gasket match it?
also what about pcm upgrades? bigger injectors? MM inserts? ECT.

If anyone could point me in the right direction to a vendor that sells such things or has some detailed info on what vehicles have such sought after items.

sorry it was so winded and to the point. my last project car was totaled by a dui driver, and im very eager to get back to work on the escort. it has a good start and can only get better, but ive bein getting frustrated because thier seems to be nothing when i search for power adders.

hey. welcome to the forum. i'm Dave.

for the 1.9's your best option is to Gasket match the intake mani as there are no vendors that have an upgraded intake for the 1.9's.

as for bigger intakes and such you can get a 3.8L Maf and Throttlebody and that will give you a decent kick in the pants. it's been along time since i've been around the 1.9's but if you have any more questons feel free to ask.

hey thanks dave thats a big help as im headed to the local u-pull tomorrow to grab up some new pieces and parts. the wife(road rager) had the car for the past 2 years and destoryed it. so now i have to spend money on restoring it also.....btw how much fun is it to change the wiper controler?......lol just so im not in the jy longer then i wanna be what cars should i look for that have the 3.8L?

is their a better steering wheel that i can get? she desided to ripped the horn center out one day because it wouldnt stop going off......grrr

ok well the Taurus 3.8L if i remember correctly u can get the throttlebody AND maf from..the wiper control is not hard 2 10mm bolts hold horn bit on the wheel then IIRC(if i remember correctly)
a 22mm nut then wheel pops off with a firm tug.
THEN the wiper control comes off as a unit along with the signal control and 2 wiring harnesses that just need to be unclipped. then reverse to install

BTW, i'm gonna attempt to do a cylinder head and piston swap from a 1st gen escort gt. 1.9 EFI HO, bigger intake ports and valves, bigger intake manifold(will not bolt to the 2nd gen cylinder head), 50mm throttle body which is the same size as the 3.8's, and O shaped combustion chambers instead of the D shape. i might have to modify the fuel rail/lines, drill a hole for the cam position sensor and swap in the 2nd gen cam shaft for the CMP notch, a cup plug for where the dizzy won't be anymore, and add a msd coil pack which is sold for mustangs but will work on escorts too. this is an idea i've had for a long time and i think it's gonna happen soon. if this don't work then imma go with plan B.

My friends dad has a good tie-in with a engine dealer so. I was thinking for next year either swapping in a SVT out of focus or go with the cosworth that was made for the 2nd gen both produce the crazy hp that I'm looking for.

Until then I would like to build this engine up as much as I can. I was reading that I can put a MTX pcm in a ATX is this true? And if it what will it add?

The power output between the MTX and ATX computers is the same. It will add nothing. Might even cause some problems if you are still running the ATX. It was either '93 or '94 where the transmission controller was combined into the engine computer, and if you replace a computer that has the controller built-in with one that doesn't, the transmission will not work correctly.

Dude... seriously.. this is a 1.9 liter 88 horsepower engine. There is no magical 'chip' or 'computer' or 'sensor' that is going to increase your horsepower.. it's just not possible with this engine in a mechanically stock condition.

The intake already breathes more than the engine could use. Gasket matching and maybe even polishing it a bit might bring some improvements, but don't expect to be blown away.

Consider putting the converter back on. These engines hardly benefit at all by eliminating it (plus it's illegal), and I have heard reports of these actually performing worse without one.

Simply put, anything else you do to this motor from this point in (except maybe the 3.8L throttle body) really is throwing money away into the trash can. Save up for your engine swaps... or for turboing it.

IMO the 3.8L tb is too big, except for turbo charged engines. It is 50mm while the manifold opening of the 1.9 is around 44mm. The 2.0L tb is 44m while the stock 1.9L is 39mm. I'd had a 2.0L tb on my old 1.9 and that made the biggest difference of anything I did to it. With the 2.0 tb you still need a little port matching and you still need to solder in a new tps pigtail, but you use the same throttle cablt setup. I still have my old 1.9 intake manifold with the 2.0 tb attached. PM me if you would like to buy it.

Swap in an SPI Engine. Instant 22HP gain stock. You can use your factory ECU and almost all of your factory wiring harness when doing the swap. Search the engine swap section for more info.

Then start modding, and you can get some decent gains.

i had a 2.0TB on my 1.9 along with a complete flo-thru exhaust system. and even for a 1.9 it pulled hard. but i was obdII so i didnt have to change anything

What's spi.....lol single port injection? My wifes dad has a wagon with one of those motors runs like crap tho. I've bein trying to figure out what its malfunction is and can't.....lol

Split Port Induction. It was used in the 97-up Escort and Tracer sedan, as well as the 1st gen Focus.

u will have to port match the intake manifold for a bigger throttle body. the size of the throttle bodys r 1.9 40mm, 2.0 44mm, 1.9 HO/3.8 50mm. with a 50mm throttle body, u'll need to uncork the exhaust. there's no need for bigger injectors till u add a turbo. SPI= split port induction. and my plan B would be to swap on a 2.0 spi cylinder head to my 1.9 block to lower the compression for a high turbo boost.

Ah lol I was a little off on that.......lol I didn't really touch the bottom part of the tb just a slight clean out the upperside on the other hand was cleaned completely out. my exhaust is wide open and craving better intake flow

but the main point is ur cars power drops off at 450rpm from 4500-6000 the power and tq band flatlines you make 88hp from 4500-6000. and the motor struggles. BUT do some upgrades n lets see how you feel might be just enough for you
