So does anyone know what’s out there at the minute for around 12k or less new and used? I’ve been looking just too see as I’ve noticed that dealerships have an “end of year sale” which can’t be too far away. I suppose I’m just thinking could there be good deals to be had to replace the tracer? I’ve looked at Nissan, KIA, Ford, Hyundai and even Toyota but haven’t seen anything jump out at me and say buy me like my wee tracer did when I found him.

I’m very 50/50 on whether to replace the tracer or not it has 92k on it, it’s a 98 GS very clean inside body is in great shape. Have the oil changed and everything inspected every three months or 3000 miles. Just did the timing belt at 82k, IAC replaced, ball joints being done this week replaced the stereo with one that has CD’s!! USB connection, AUX port and SD slot! Apart from the normal groans and creeks that come with age it’s in nice shape and I don’t smoke! I suppose I wouldn’t really get a lot for the tracer now? What 2,000 max more likely around 1,500 or less maybe?

Any thoughts or suggestions? :D

There are a ton of options if you've got $12g's to spend. At that point it would depend on what you are looking for in a vehicle.

That BM looks nice but not quite my type of car!

I checked KBB online and it’s saying my tracer in “Excellent” condition is worth around $1,525 and in “Good” condition is worth around $1,350. I wouldn’t say “Excellent” condition as there is a small scuff mark on the front bumper and a small wrinkle on the paint on the back bumper. Not really noticeable unless pointed out. Inside is stock apart from the stereo but everything is in great shape and clean.

I think I’m just tossing around the idea in my head whether or not I should get a new or almost new/used car or stick with what I have. Don’t get me wrong I like my tracer and it has a lot of charter but now for me at least could be a really good time to buy a car.

What I’m looking for (and I know I won’t get everything) is fuel economy I’d like to keep it the same or higher than my tracer. I currently get around 27-28mpg. I would like more power the tracer has plenty of power if I don’t use the A/C lol.. I’m originally from Ireland living in Florida I need the A/C all the time! I’d prefer to keep it 4 cylinder but with a bit more horse power or a more efficient A/C system? I’d like about the same size as the tracer or even a bit bigger would be nice. 4 door is a must I really don’t like 2 door and don’t want to get into an accident in a hatchback! I suppose I’m almost looking for a 2009 Tracer lol or it’s best equivalent.

A used Mazda 3 in excellent condition/low mileage should be well within your price range.

As has been said, 12K gives you quite a few vehicle choices. Have you looked into a used Honda Fit or Scion xA? The squarish xB probably isn't your style. The Mazda 3 probably won't get the mileage that your Escort got especially if it has the 2.3L.

KBB tends to overvalue cars. Use NADA or Edmund's TMV.

My dad just bought like a 2006 or 07 idk newer ford fusion with 30,000 miles for around 10,000 bucks. v6 gets like 25mpg city and 28 on the highway at 75mph. Nice car I drove it 500 miles to the cities and back. Very quiet. Things I didnt like were the a pillar was huge, but I think its that way on most newer cars.

I’ve still been looking and thinking but I still don’t have anything jump out at me.. although I think you are right about the price for my car KBB must be on crack if it’s saying $1,500 for my car… I’ve driven around and seen scary looking cars leaking all kinds of crap for that price! I think I’ll aim a bit higher should I decide to sell and sell is always better than trade unless the dealership needs to shift cars and get some cash coming in.

It’s such a hard decision.. keep a perfectly fine car or sell it for a new car and end up with a car payment.. not a large payment but still a payment. So many decisions! Then again away go most of the this needs fixed or that needs looked at or it’s time to check this.. etc all the small things that wear out in a car that is now 10 – 11 years old.

have you considered purchasing 24 escorts in fair condition? one for every bi-week!!!
Now their is an idea.. I could change my escort every other week! lol.. I'm sure I wouldn't go wrong with a BMW but it's not really my type of car. I've read now that Saturn is sold/being sold there could be a big end of year sale as GM gets rid of it's stock.. don't know if that's true or not? Then again I don't know if I'd want a Saturn lol

The Hyundai Accent (not the hatchback) actually didn't look like a bad deal? Could get a lot of options and very good warranty in what appears (from the reviews I've read) to be a decent car. It would be right on budget as well and if I made a decent down payment I'd have low monthly payments.. mmmm. Anyone had any experience with the Accent?

I've done some searching and found a few cars that are under the MSRP at local dealers or for sale certified used with warranty with very low miles at around the price I'm willing to pay. I just seen a Versa 1.8 sedan, ABS, no stereo, silver with 90 miles on the clock for around 11,700 if I remember right.

I think I actually should consider the Nissan Versa, Honda Fit or even the Hyundai. I've read reviews and seen the yaris but I just couldn't bring myself to drive it, I don't like the interior!

I'm giving some serious thought to the Versa 1.8 I seen above. As far as the Escort/Tracer goes I may very well pass it on to my wife who’s Saturn is getting up there in mileage.. I’ve 93k on my Escort/Tracer vs her 146k on the Saturn! The only bad thing about all of these thoughts is a car payment! lol

When you said around 12K I figured you had the cash in hand.

Thats my budget at around 12k, sorry I don't just walk around with it in hand or stash it under the matress lol. I could put it togeather but I actually need to make payments on something large. Am still not many years in America and in order to buy a house someday I have to build my credit.. I know it's crap and I'll be throwing good money to the evil bank but I'd like to get a decent rate on a larger loan for a house at some point.

The best way to build your credit is to get at least two credit cards, use them for almost everything, and pay them off each month. Always pay on time and never go over your limit. A decent job also helps. Paying cash for a car gives you more room to haggle on the price as well.

I had no idea they made a Versa sedan. I hope the radio wiring is is there because if it isn't you will have quite a time wiring it. Even drilling a hole to mount an antenna. I see a blank button on the console, does it even have A/C? I would consider that a necessity in Florida.
