1.8L DOHC 16 valve Mazda engine. same engine used in 90-94 Proteges, Tracer LTS, and Escort LX-Es. (not to mention some Miatas too)
This engine redlines at 7k rpm max power output of 127 hp @ 6500 rpm and 114 lb ft torque @ 4500 rpm.
It uses a VAF on the 91-95 and a MAF on the 96 GTs. It uses VICS which is vacuum operated at 5500 rpm to open four butterfly valves at the top of the intake to allow more air to flow allowing for the 7k rpm redline.

The engine is supposed to be a non interference engine but I've heard either way. I would say change the timing belt as soon as possible to keep from hurting your girlfriends wallet.
One very common problem that I've heard about:
A small rip or tear in the plastic intake tube between throttle body and VAF. symptoms: the engine jerks and stumbles because too much (dirty) air is getting into it. Also check for the downpipe below the manifold if/when this occurs.

Thanks thezfunk. I just bought the bushings and end links for both front and rear. Those will help as I am planning on replacing my own suspension...why? hires wanted a total of 900 for basically labor, including 200 for the tie rods though. rediculous.

if i can get all the parts i would need, then I could almost cut that price in half. I can do a lot of it myself but the inner workings of the suspension I don't want to mess with. Parts is what was killing me, the labor wasn't that bad.
