My parking brake on my 99 LX worked marginally since I bought the car this March. It would hold it on a hill if I yanked up hard on the lever (ie. with both hands). Because it normally barely worked one day I forgot it was on and rode off. It didn't work at all after that - it would start to grab and then make a creaking sound as the car started to roll.

So, yesterday I pulled the drums off and saw the shoes were worn out, so I replaced them. I checked the drums and they weren't grooved so I reused them. I pushed the ratcheting adjuster piece (I think it's part of the parking brake mechanism) all the way back so the drum would fit over the new shoes. After all that, I adjusted the adjuster at the handbrake, but it still won't hold. I have that adjuster so tight I have to pull the handbrake with 2 hands to get it to 5-6 clicks, and I can still get behind the car and push it, even though there is definitely some more drag. On my old car (96 Escort) the ebrake was so strong I could drag the back wheels with it, and I only needed one hand to pull the lever. I'm not sure if there is some kind of adjuster at the back wheels that needs to be tightened, but I couldn't find anything.

Ah.. it looks like the cables are $50 for EACH side at autozone. I think I'll just park it in gear and forget about it if thats the case

I might try Rockauto - another month when I have some cash to spare. I screwed with the adjuster more today, but no luck. Just won't hold.
