I replace fuel pump in my 2001 ZX2 and can't get the pump to prime or turn on? I check pump before install and it runs when hooked to 12 volts. I have power at pump. What all can I test as far as the wires on top of the pump? Which are power which are ground? What is the other wire connector coming up from behind the tank. Not part of fuel pump but both connect near pump?

I see service manuals selling on ebay for your year of Escort. I would recommend you buy both the Electric and Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual (EVTM), which has the wiring diagrams in it along with pictorials showing the location of components on the car, and get the Service Manual. They are pretty cheap.
Then you can check out the fuel pump relay.
My Escorts are all 2nd gen LX ones, and are very different electrically.

The fuel pump is driven by a fuel pump driver module. It cycles the pump on and off as necessary, instead of having the pump run constantly like in older cars. You should see a 2 second prime, but you won't get 12V constantly because the pump won't run constantly.
