Looks nice, james. You´ve got rust in the same spot I do... and I´ve got the bragging rights to a whole lot more! :)

Where on earth did you pick up those snazzy headlight covers? I was planning on building my own angeleyes out of blue LEDs in the older E36 style headlights, then tinting the entire thing with some window tint spraypaint... I think it would look hella pimp, especially on a black GT like mine where all the lights and everything just blend right into the body. It looks really nice.

Did you tint your windows? Why is it that every GT I see other than my own looks like it has tinted windows...

It´s actually a pretty funny story how I got those headlight covers...it was December and I was working 3rd shift and wanted some light on my drive to and from Meijer (obviously, at night) so I went into Autozone and ordered "headlight covers..." well when I got them they were just those darkened AVS covers...what I wanted was the headlight assembly itself. I knew 45 bucks was cheap for the assemblies. Well I went back to autozone and ordered the headlight assemblies...300 bucks for the set!!!!!!! If I knew I could do the E36 conversion I would have just done that, for 75/each, I could have saved myself $150! Anyway, I just started using them during the day. I think they make my car look freakin´ awesome too. with those HID driving lamps I can keep them on at night now and still have light to drive. I didn´t actually tint the windows in my car, when I bought it in November 2001 they were already like that. I LOVE it. I also love my AVS rain guards. 45 bucks for the front set as well. I do wish I had a black GT cause then I´d keep the headlight covers on, tint the windows black and put some 16" black rims on there. I just need to get rid of that rust. one of these days I´ll get a power grinder and grind it down to the good metal, then if I can find one, spot weld a new piece of sheetmetal on it, bondo, sand, primer, sand, paint, stand back and smile :-] That´ll be great. She´s coming along and I hope I can keep this car forever so I can fix her up to my hearts content. I know eventually that I´m going to want/be able to afford a Camaro, but everyone else has two cars...why can´t I?? ;-)

yep, my escort has rust:
above the rear wheel wells like james´
on the rear hatch (one of the liscense plate lights has rusted out)
on the very bottom edge of the driver´s side door
along the side trim on both sides in random locations
near the door handles in various locations
near the edge of the bumper on the front left corner light
in the spare tire compartment, rusted through the frame
along the front of the frame near the radiator
the AC compressor has been rusted to hell

basically I drive a giant pile of rust. :-]

well if you think about it, the wheel wells are the most susceptible to rust because after it snows & the city puts down the salt, the wheels will kick it up as they drive over it. and it gets up underneath and inside the wheel well and starts to eat away at the metal from the inside out.

I didn´t pay too much attention to physics in high school so I couldn´t tell ya how salt gets up in there. I have a tiny spot of rust to the right of my license plate and I don´t have a clue how it started. I didn´t notice it til i had the car for about 6 months.

reason why it gets into the hatch is because of the pressure differential... there´s a huge low pressure system in the rear of the car, which is why you always see leaves get kicked up in the fall and stuff.. all the salt that your tires kick up behind the car gets "sucked" into the back end of the car...

this is why the backs of the escort wagons are always so fucking dirty- because they have an almost straight dropoff in the end, so there´s a ton of drag and a low pressure system back there... the flow is turbulent.

Yeah mine has rust on the rear lips too, as well as the hatch edge. Of course any car is susceptible in the wheel opening, but the 2ngd gen Escort is more prone than most cars because it is just designed real stupid there. If you look closely at the steel there and compare to another car you will know what I mean. Let´s face it they don´t care what happens to the car once they take your money. As for the hatch, well there are two factors working on it. Practically every car I know of rusts there. the condensation on the inside rolls down to the crevice where the two pieces of steel meet, and pool there. It´s the same as the doors. Drainage holes don´t drain every last water molecule. The little bit at the end clings there and of course there is salt in it. I think the carmakers pay for the salt.(WHO SAID CONSPIRACY) Being at the back of the car brings in the second factor: the eddy currents back there deposit the salty mist onto the back of the car and of course it sticks. Mine also has rust under the windshield along the top and a bit at the very bottom on both sides, and the bottom of the doors, and the very outside edges of the trunk floor, where it is always wet. Oh well I guess I´ll just give Ford or some other company another 30 large and start another deterioration project. Hey! Maybe I can get a grant for that!! :-?

The only thing that protects your car from completely rusting out is the paint, right? Well this is another reason why some of these areas are susceptible they have little or no paint on them. For expample if you´ve ever had your door tore apart you´ll see that the inside of the door isn´t painted. Once condensation gets in there, there´s nothing to protect the metal from rusting. The design also plays a big part in it too. I have a first gen scort it the only spots it has rust is at the bottom of the doors, above the liscense plate on the hatch, and below the liscense plate where I was rear-ended by a big ol´ chevy truck and the paint came off. None in the trunk or on the wheel wells. My second gen is a different story all together. The area where the jack is supposed to go is almost completely gone. There´s a whole under the back seat near the wheel. The rear strut housing is rusted and cracked. And there´s alot more on various places. But, hey we make our rust buckets look the best we can right James?

That´s right. I´m a makin the rest of my car look ok so the attention doesn´t go straight to the rust spot. I was out yesterday and I drove by this Civic HX which was lowered and had ugly ass 15" rims and a fart can on it, they all looked at my front end because of the nozzels, fogs and headlight covers. I don´t think they noticed the rust at all

Whats the freakin deal here? I also have some rust in exactly the same spot. And I have seen rust on other scorts in that exact spot. Makes me wonder what about that area makes it so susceptible to rust.....hmmm

I bet that spot is more susceptible to rust because it´s under the fuel filler. Any spilled fuel would eat away at the paint, leading to eventual rust. That and it´s right at the wheelwell with salt spray and all.

James, that´s an awesome Cardomain site you have. I can tell you put a lot of work into it. Lots of good information and pics. I like the headlight covers and tint too!

w00t i´m so happy i have no rust at all :D *defend from the many blows from other Scort owners...* the paint is just peeling a bit on the back wheel wells, which can be easily touched up

Yeah, I don´t have any rust on either of my scorts either! :p
