just purchased a 92 escort wagon, runs great minus one thing, have to pump the clutch twice to shift gears. was told to check the gear oil and see if it needs any, thats a good one, dont really know where it is that i need to check. i see two spots on the unit on the bottom but if take the slotted screw out the oil will spill everywhere and the same with the hex nut. so where do i fill the gear oil at? totally baffeled and dont want a mechanic to look at it, he'll tell me to cash for clunker it, gets to good gas milage to do that.

More than likely, you need to check out the clutch hydraulics for leaks. Loss of gear oil will affect shift quality, but won't require you to pump the clutch. The clutch master cylinder is bolted to the firewall, under the battery tray. If it is leaking, it will usually leak into the passenger compartment, right by the clutch pedal.

The clutch slave cylinder is bolted to the transmission, and pushes on a metal lever that releases the clutch.

P.S. The transmission fluid is checked through the vehicle speed sensor, located at the firewall end of the transmission. Filling the transmission is done in the same place.
