I had a 1.9L that was losing coolant little be little, so I pulled the head. It needed to be milled to get rid of the arch. Had to get .006" milled off the top of the block, to get below the rusted area caused by a previous head gasket going bad.

You can by without the timing belt cover - just keep your fingers and the wiring harness out of the way.

When you say oil-handle; do you mean the dipstick? Be sure to get a dipstick that is right for your car's dipstick tube. The early 2nd. gen. Escorts had a dipstick that came up close to the passenger side strut tower. As of 94 the dipstick/tube came up between the 2nd and 3rd intake tubes, behind the valve cover. I done know just when they made the change, and I forget which one is longer; but Im pretty sure they are not the same length.
