I got a 91 escort gt with a blown motor several months back and have just got around to pulling and replacing the motor. The new motor has 70k and had been sitting in a garage for about 2 years. Upon completing the project, i fired the car up and it was knocking and smoking like crazy, thought the motor had a blown head gasket and the bottom end probably need a rebuild. I let it idle up to temperature and the knocking began to quiet down but it was still smoking quiet a bit. I took it around the block and after about 5 minutes or so all the knock had gone and it isn't smoking whatsoever. Just wondering what you guys think this would be caused by? Stuck rings, blocked oil passages maybe....idk.

Here is a link to how it was running before it cleared up.

I had the same experience once with a Chrysler 2.2 that sat for a few years. After I put the motor in, it knocked and smoked for about 15 minutes, then ran perfect. I put almost 40,000 miles on that motor before I sold the car and never had a problem with it. I never did figure out what caused it, but after that experience I always made sure to prime the oil pump before starting a motor that has sat for a while.
You got a good looking GT there for $450!!

It runs like a champ now, not a tick or knock. Just need to get the exhaust re welded.

These engines have hydraulic lifters and it just took time for the lash to go away. Probably smoked due to sticky rings or valve guide seals.
