This has been one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make.. sad, isn't it? Well I just got a huge raise, so I'm making my EGT run 12's on turbo and nitrous, and getting a NICE daily driver.. just let me know what y'all think I should get. Here are the options.

1. '96 BMW M3 5speed
2. '98 BMW 328is 5speed
3. '96 BMW 540i 6speed
4. '00 Lincoln LS auto
5. '97 Mercedes-Benz E420 auto
6. '02 Nissan Maxima 6speed
7. '98 Lincoln Mark VIII auto

Feel free to englighten me as to why I should get a different car, but I've done tons of homework and these are the few I have narrowed it down to.. all between $15-20k.

If you want a car that will go 50,000 miles and something breaks and it costing you an arm and a leg then sure go ahead and buy the BmW. If you want to buy a car and let the dealer get over on you and sell you a car for 10,000 dollars more than the car is worth then buy the lincoln. But, if you want a car with a good resale value and really reliable then I would go with any mercedes. IMHO. I have owned BMW's and their only a name, and now that I could go right down town and pick up another one for about 2,000 dollars I still would rather own a mercedes, and pay 5,000 dollars for one. IMHO though. Good luck with shopping, if your buying used, may I suggest take an NADA book, the little orange one, that will tell you what their car is worth before any of the salesmen get a chance to even haggle with you. It will give you the upper hand no matter what your looking for. The Bmw Is a NICE car, but I know from a few people right here in my neighborhood, 3 couples who have 96-2000 that their cars have been in the shop quite a few times. And we're in Italy...You would think they would run or be a little more reliable over here since these people supposedly know how to fix them.
Well going to go for now....Like I said get an NADA, sold in book stores...

BMW and Mercedes both have fanbases and horror stories, I wouldn't discredit one without discrediting the other. I've driven a mercedes w/ half a million miles on it (diesel, of course) and thought it was a nice highway ride.. not a bad daily driver at all. I've also driven several BMWs with over 200k mi on them that still run like a swiss watch. I'm more of a BMW person, because of my driving style (Mercedes' truck steering from their older models will never win me over).

I would reccomend against any used BMW with an S motor (IE M cars) unless you just got a hefty inheritance to go along with that raise. (same goes for AMG Mercs) When something breaks you will not be able to afford the parts.. I can almost guarantee that.

Get yourself a nice late 90's 528is with a 5 speed. You won't be dissapointed one bit. The BMW big sixes are built extremely well, and the e28 chassis will be sorely missed (and long heralded as the definitive sports sedan).. it's a winning combination. You should be able to find enough 2.8Ls in the junkyard to get parts easily. The 4.0L v8 is a bit too much like the S motors.. too expensive.. also, the weight balance isn't as good.

As for the Lincoln LS, why buy a BMW immitation?

The maxima is fine if you can stand to sit in the crappy interior for any amount of time, or look at the exterior for that matter.

Lincoln Mark VIII??? :?: What?

BTW: Have you checked to see what your insurance rates will be on an M3? You must not have, because it's still there on your list.

Here's my most honest suggestion:
You're young.. invest your money in things that won't lose their value. Forget about throwing $15k away on a car, and get a cheap daily driver that will get you there and back. Start saving it.. buy stable stocks.. buy some land.. think of this raise as an opportunity to improve your life, and not just your wheels.

not on the list...but why not save soem cash and get something like a Protege 5, Focus, SVT Focus, Mazdaspeed 3
need a car that will consistantly cruise at 140+ mph (don't ask).. and preferably something faster than my current escort.

i've also added svt contours and a '99 SHO's into the bag.

update -
m3 - insurance will be $320/months. not really THAT bad.. i'm paying $190/mnth for liability on my escort.. haven't found one for sale locally to test drive.
328is - looking nicer than the m3 at the moment.. price-wise anway. can't find a 5-speed to test drive.
528i - BEAUTIFUL. i drove an automatic, but it was dog piss slow. i would want the 540i. can't find one locally.
lincoln ls - why drive a bmw immitation? because it's an awesome car in all aspects other than the transmission.. which i hated and hopefully will never have to attempt to make another LS downshift again.. ever.. however, when it does downshift, it hauls ace down the highway.
merc. e420 - feels too heavy.. i didn't even bother taking it out of the parking lot.. felt like my grandpa's buick roadmaster.
maxima - quite possibly the most horrible shifting trans. ever created. i hope none of you ever have the discomfort of attempt to drive a 6-speed maxima at any good rate of speed. i now see why they offer the 5speed in the '04's again... but once you finally got it into the gear, this car simply FLIES. sweet god it moves.
mark viii - hauls ass. nice interior. extremely comfortable. shifts nice. awesome car. still a consideration. what are the :?: 's for?

There's no need to ask, we know.

If you're going to insist that you shorten your lifespan, at least do so in a german automobile. BMWs and Mercs were designed and developed on the autobahn.. Lincolns were designed and developed on the potholes of Detroit... Sure, the lincolns might feel stable at high speed (slow steering will do that), but they lack the proper shock valving or suspension geometry for truly good high speed stability. What makes the Merc feel heavy in the parking lot makes it feel like a real gem at 70mph on the interstate (and the E's aren't nearly as heavy as they feel). Also, RWD is better for relaxed cruising.. no torque steer w/ speed changes.. so I'd avoid the Maxima for that (and the shifter).

LOL... Beverboy never seizes to impress me. I am his biggest fan. :) I just love his anwers. He makes the most sense to me out of any ford escort forum participant. He writes well, his points are good. I wonder who he is...

We own a 98 BMW 328i that we bought from the BMW dealership. Wow, that proved to be a lot more expensive than buying elsewhere.

But why I bring that up is that it is a smooth, fast car and I have only one compliant about. It is a tiny car!!!

I can barely fit in it.

You can barely fit 4 people in it.

I was the one who decided not to get the 528i althought my father wanted to. My logic was that the smaller 328i would be faster. The 528i has the same engine.

However that was a mistake. We should have got the 528 i because the 328 i is too small for my family. It is too small for ANY American family. Maybe its o.k. for a famished family.

So my guess is that the 540i would be a good compromise. However 1996 is too old. Try a 1999 540.

Better yet get a 540 and drop a m5 motor in it as one of my friends did.

But then you gotta think of what Beaverboy said, and another reason why I complemented him so much... He said that you should only put so much money in your wheels. And, as always, I agree with him 100%.

So my answer to your guestion. Get the latest model of BMW 540 that you can afford comfortably. Eg. 1999 540i. Good luck.

I'm still stumped on this comment. The most power, and highest *theoretical* top speed (governed to 130) out of all the cars i listed and it gets a :?: .

I'm sure the e420 does wonderfully on an autobahn, but it still felt like a buick roadmaster. :)

as for the 540i's - 96's run $15-20k, where 99's run $30-35k.. and they're for the most part identical cars, other than the fact one's been roaming the earth 3 extra years. also, i'm pretty sure it's the same 4.4 that's in the x5.. i would LOVE to find one with a 6-speed. 8O

as for the LS, it was designed in germany alongside your beloved bmw's and mb's, and it has a jaguar drivetrain. despite what you think, it really IS a really nice car.. it just hates downshifting..

this is a fun convo - i love you beaver.
at this point, the e420 and maxima are no longer contenders in the race for my money.. nor is the svt contour (raced one tonight.. pitiful.. )
i'm going to drive a '99 SHO tommorow.. we'll see what happens.

Alright.. I take back my " :?: "

I always thought the Mark VIII was pretty baddass looking. I think it was the first american car to get HID headlamps and probably one of the sleekest American sedans ever. It's still just a lincoln towncar underneath though.

I'm just doubting that cars like the LS have engines who's blocks are allowed to sit and cure before milling. Ford is the one who made Jaguar's drivetrains reliable, but I still don't think Ford's parts are up to the standard of the MBs and BMWs (nor do I think any other carmakers are either). I'm a fanboi though :p Unlike most BMW & MB fanbois, I actually like what's under the hood, not just the emblem on the hood. The LS may have all the right suspension tuning though. *shrug*

I'm not used to getting such positive support :3some: on forums.. I'm occasionally a bit of a troll. So um.. thanks :toothy9:

4.4L v8 you say? I think you're right. I wouldn't mind a 540i touring w/ the 6 speed (I'm a wagon fanboi as well, you know), but the BMW 8cyls just scare me (being lower middle class, and all that poor man jazz).

Tito, order free parts catalogs from BMP and Bavarian Autosport and compare parts prices between the 528 and 540. They may not be bad at all.. I haven't bothered to look much.

No kidding.. the 3 series is smaller than it looks and the interior isn't made for space savings like most Japanese cars. I think my old e21 320i has about 6 more cubic feet of interior volume than the e36s. E30s aren't any better. I got to drive a friend's 328is (automatic :x ) back in college on numerous occasions. Nice ride.. just right for 2 people on day trips. (BTW, too bad I'm a car nut, she was hot and probably thought I hung out with her so much because of her car :x )

Maxima, One of the best V-6 in the world, nice interior, exterior,
prolly the most trouble free, standard Xenon headlights, and
they are fast.
only behind the v-6 in buick grand nationals. :)
pretty good interior, ok exterior
NOT the most trouble free.. brakes warp, maf's go bad on a yearly basis, and the standard xenon lights are a hot commodity on the black market, so they are stolen quite often, costing $5-8k to replace.. i'm not shitting you... and nissan customer service is ranked in the bottom 20% of all car manufacturers..

and yes, when you can calm yourself down enough to find the gear you want, they do haul ass. :)

and i think the mark viii is more thunderbird underneath than towncar.. and i'm a tbird guy. :)
