i blew, yet another neon off the road the other night, must be my third one by now
damn kids in moms neon deserve it to, i ended the race by the time i hit third. i was crushing him and i felt no need to keep it up, id rather save the gas
Before buying the Grand Prix, I drove a 99 Neon, supposed to have the SOHC 132horsepower motor. Car was in pristine condition so I expected the motor to be in fine shape as well. Noticed, however, that they are really bad on power. Must be a torque difference. I mean the EGT has 127 horsepower stock, and the Neon 132 but the EGT just feels so much faster and more capable. Even at highway speed, the Neon felt underpowered. Neons may have 132 advertised horses but I have to wonder how much is lost due to driveline considerations. Just didn´t feel very peppy....
hmmm, dont think so... why dont you try my neon out. I think I have already killed someone from this bord, he lives or is in hamilton. The interior of this car is all white, he has a monster tack, just put an apr wing on his car.....
I will say this, in the 1/4 mile Neons and GTs stock for stock will run nearly side by side. A sitck shift stock neon will smoke an automatic GT. a stick GT will smoke an automatic neon. I was in the used car business long enough and have driven enough of them to say for certain the better driver will most likely win cause the cars are not much different from a drag racing perspective. And for any Neon owners out there, you can gain a lot of top end power by installing a quality exhaust system. the stocker is very restrictive.
Beffy. LOL I think it was me
I can tell you why. I had fiering order messed up. So I reced you on 2.5 cilinders)) Also my clutch was slipping. And I had oil leak because of broken bolt on the valve cover. Sometimes playing with engine and not paying attention to details will cost you))
Regular Neon SOHC only have 100 HP, Neon R/Ts have some 160 hp i believe and the New R/TS or whatever it is turbo-ed will have 205 horsepower. Any car with a manual that has remotely the same specs as a diff car with an auto will take that car out. you can get much much quicker response times with manuals. I´ve met and whooped up on a few Neons since last november...except for the R/T i met, but i don´t care because my car is stock, if i had a turbo then i would have been embarrassed. I wish Ford hadn´t discontinued the Escort because the Focus, because then there might be turbos and better exhaust systems for the beloved Scorts. The odd thing is the Escort will take the Focus ZX3s. but not the SVT. (obviously)
...interesting but the 1.8 BPT version of the second-generation Escort GT engine makes more HP than the SVT even in stock form and you can get one for $1000. That´s a race I´d like to see. With the GT´s lower weight, I bet it would come out well ahead. The total cost of an EGT with that engine swap would be well under half the cost of an SVT. That leaves a lot of money for further tuning. I´m waiting for the supercharged SVT that´ll come out next.
Rob-from-Ottawa what are you talking about? The Focus SVT? if so then you´re in for a surprise because it has 170 HP, well ahead of the 2nd Gen EGT. the the EGT can beat all focus´ out except the SVT. And they already make superchargers for the SVT. go online and research it. you´ll find some.
Hey juggernaut... im from moose jaw and i just happen to be looking for a set of escort rims..to paint white for my black 93 lx the interior is pimpin but outside its not...another ? do you have any tires you want to sell...well anyway i might be coming into regina on saturday so maybe i could stop by or something but im not very good at getting around regina so maybe we could meet at Innovation audio...lmk [email protected]
Hi James. I was talking about the 1.8l Mazda BPT engine that came with the Japan-only Familia GTX (= 323) and Australia-spec Escort. It´s just a lower compression version of the EGT engine plus that little turbo doohickey. Makes 179HP stock, readily tuned to 220 HP, I´m told. Someone out there has gone well past 300. They´re available in the US through Corksport and other distributors. Isn´t that tempting?
As for SVT aftermarket superchargers, I´m sure you´re right. But I´m fairly sure Ford´s SVT group will offer its own within a couple of years. That engine just isn´t making as much power as it should, in my view. I still really like the ZX3 SVT concept, obviously.
(I´ve dragged us well off topic here - sorry Neon lovers)
Well, stock the Focus SVT is making 170 hp (claimed) which is in the right neighborhood to take on the Civic SI and the Celica GTS, among other cars of course, which is what it was built to compete against. Let´s be honest here, ANY STOCK engine that ANY car manufacturer puts out is not making nearly the amount of HP what it could be, thats always going to be a given. Car manufacturers simply don´t want to totally over run the competition because of the repercussions for the next year models. It´s the same thing with the Mustang and F-Body Twins (Camaro and Firebird), FINALLY the Mustang is the true winner after all these years of being the Underdog. Lets say the Focus SVT makes 300 HP, well then Toyota could come back the next year with a 350 hp Celica, and to me that´s a little extreme for such small cars. They also limit HP and torque so that people can buy them and tune them how they want, i don´t know about Toyota, but Ford loves it when people do that.
And you had a point, i don´t know much of anything about Aussie and European spec Scort/Mazda engines. I´m sure they are available through corksport, but with a pretty hefty tag on import taxes, etc.
I´m set in my American ways, although i was thinking about buying a Corolla. the new 2003 S models are pretty sweet lookin, and they compete nicely with the Escort. But lately i´ve been trying to decide whether or not to keep this car and just rebuild the engine, meaning nothing but the block itself will be stock. Lately and the more i think about it, I am leaning towards this course of action.
I like the Focus, but i´m not a big fan of hatchbacks (yeah yeah I am driving one, but technically it´s a "notchback" hehe
) I´d have thought about getting a Focus if they made it in a sedan with a separate closed trunk. I´m not 100% sure but i think Ford already has a supercharger for the Focus SVT, unless i´m just thinking about the Eaton Supercharger for the Mustang GT/SVT. I dunno.
oh and don´t be apologetic to Neon drivers, they bought (my opinion) a piece of junk and they´re paying the price now when they pull up next to me.
Well i probably got about 5 more posts i can reply to tonight, catch ya later Rob.
OK GUYS ET ME CLEAR THE AIR FOR ALL OF YOU GUYS. MYSELF HAVING JUST CAME FROM DRIVING A HEAVILY MODIFIED 96 NEON. WITH THE SOHC 2.0 IN IT. HERE ARE THE STOCK SPECS SOHC=130 [email protected] AND 125LB/[email protected] NEON RT WITH DOHC [email protected] AND 145LB/[email protected] AND THE NEON ACR IS RATED THE SAME AS THE NEON RT ONLY HAVING AND AUTO CROSS SUSPENSION AND A LOWER FIFTH GEAR FOR BETTER ACELERATION ON RACE TRACS. tHE AUTO NEONS ARE OF COURSE CRAP JUST LIKE ANY AUTO CAR ´SCORTS INCLUDED. SO AS YOU CAN SEE THEY ARE VERY CAPABLE CARS. TO REPLY TO THE OTHER POST OF ADDIN EXHAUST TO NEONS FOR MORE POWER. THAT´S ONLY HALFWAY CORRECT THE SOHC BENEFITS GREATLY FROM A MUFFLER HOWEVER THE DOHC DOES NOT. ALL NEONS COME STOCK WITH 2 1/4 INCH EXHAUST SO UPGRADING TO LARGER PIPING IS NOT NECESARY UNLESS TURBO CHARGING. MY OLD NEON RAN CONSISTENT 13 SECOND PASSES WHILE NATURALLY ASPIRATED AND DROPPED INTO HIGH 12´S WITH A 75 HP SHOT FROM A NITROUS EXPRESS KIT. I HAVE SINCE TOTALED THAT CAR AND PURCHASED A 91 SCORT WAGON FOR 300 BUCKS. SO I PLAN ON DOING EVERYTHING I CAN WITH IT. I THINK POSSIBLY WE SHOULD REMEBER WETHER YOU´RE DRIVING DODGE FORD OR CHEVY YOUR STILL AN "IMPORT FIGHTER" SO LET´S KEEP SOME UNITY. THE KEY TO WHAT I´M SAYING HERE IS BE A MINIMALIST DO AS MUCH AS YOU CAN WITH AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE, AND THEN BRAG ABOUT IT. I MEAN ISN´T THAT WHY WE´RE RACING 4 BANGERS ANYWAYS?
Well said Keno. the thing that dissapoints me about the ZX2 is that it is the same darn thing a a 2nd gen EGT but without the rear discs. the engine may be slightly larger but has less excitement and a lower redline. and it also shares the same external design as the 1.8l dohc. the rear suspension cradles are the same and I think a 2nd gen rear setup with discs could bolt right up to the 3rd gens. the front end is the same. I own a 94 egt and a 02 ZX2 and after poking around I feel that these two cars are the same thing with different sheet metal. sad to say it but I thing my 94 can out perform the 02.
