Depends what you're looking for. I posted an ad last year, they wouldn't let us say if we wanted a male or female, but if you prefer one or the other, try it. Smoker/non smoker. Younger/older/student etc. Just talk to them, see what they're like.

Ask him/her what he/she does (ie student, working, etc).

Ash him/her how long he/she plans to stay there.

Ask him/her why he/she is looking for a place - what happened at the last place?

Trust your instincts.

In my last year of university, I managed and maintained a rental home (in return I got free rent). Roommates came and went like flies. It was very stressful. Ended up with a bunch of junkies in the house, one of whom was extremely violent. It was just plain dangerous - and there I was trying to finish my degree. I ended up moving out after four months for my own safety and well-being.

Be very selective. Better to have no roommate than someone who is going to be a nightmare.

Personally, I'd try to get a female as opposed to a male. Women are usually less violent and destructive. Plus, they have breasts  . I know you said minimize the number of jokes, but I had to say that. We can have a little bit of fun with it.

Good luck.

A female roommate might not be a bad idea, not for sexual reasons, but it can sometimes help to have a lady around... ever notice how they are assumed to be more responsible???

I don't rent, but I can tell youthat High is dead on about your instincts... trust them, if something doesn't seem right about someon ewho otherwise appears fine, don't do it, people lie all the time.. it's sad but true. Other than that, what questions to ask totaly depend on you.

Would you rather have someone who is into the same stuf as you (meaning they might be around to chat all the time) or possibly someone with different tastes in hobbies? I prefer the latter, I like having something in common but I also like learning about stuff I might normally not look into. Just go with what you want out of a roommate, and unless you (or the other roommie) are opposed to having a female living in the house don't rule that out.

girls are a good idea if at all possible... Guys act more mature when girls are around... I wish you luck finding one that is willing to live with a bunch of guys though.

I dunno what to recommend u ask... and u said no jokes... so I won't recommend asking the girl if she's interested in new experiences with you and the wife / friend (depending on whether the friend is male/female).
