OK, I've got my short shifter bolted on, but how on earth do you get the retaining spring back in? I can't figure out how to get it in for the life of me. Is it supposed to go back in upside down or something?

Some have said that the retaining spring has to be trimmed in order to accommodate the short shifter.

I didn't have to do it in my '91 (Pacesetter) or my '96 (Fidanza) but it surely differs brand-to-brand.

You could try trimming some material off the bottom of the spring to get it to fit down in there and seat correctly.

:shrug

It fits and bolted in perfect. If I cut all the rings off the spring, I can fit the clip into the groove.

Cut ALL the rings off the spring?

Are you sure the shifter is pushed down into the stabiliser bar the entire way?

In order to get the shifter assembly fully seated into the '96, I had to be under the car pushing up on the stabiliser while my gf was inside the car pushing down on the shifter. If I pushed too hard on the shifter without bracing the stabiliser from beneath, the entire thing would drop through the floor.

One of the O-rings probably got caught. I had to remove the O-rings from my shifter to get it all the way down, then I had to cut one coil off the spring to make that fit.
