I just drove my 1999 escort 830 miles from Tacoma WA to Billings MT and while on the trip the engine performed amazing sounded great and even got 35 mpg. The only thing that really troubled me was a rattling sound when the engine was sitting at idle and then i started noticing that every time i let off the gas it made a loud rattle type growl. It progressively got worse till i rolled up to my place in Billings. It still starts and runs fin except for when i let off the gas it rattles something fierce.
Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I found that there was a missing bolt on a bracket holding the exhaust pipe on right behind the cat. Hopefully getting a new bolt in there will fix it. I will let you know.

Just finished replacing the bolt on the bracket holding the exhaust pipe on and did not help the rattling problem at all. Upon more investigation i have pinpointed that the sound is coming from the back of the transmission.... Any ideas on what the problem could be would be appreciated. It only makes the sound when costing or releasing the gas. Makes slight rattle when idling.

Does it have enough oil and the proper type in, could be a differential bearing.

Edit: Before going that far are the trans mount OK a cracked mount can cause noise and hard shift. Check all three.

Rattling sound reply...

So this is in reply to the 1999 Escort owner with the rattling problem. I have a 97 4-door Escort LX and I recently was experiencing the same thing. I just took it to the Ford Dealership here in my town and the rattling was actually 2 of the cylinders misfiring causing the entire engine to shake. Ive read a few articles about Escort having alot of misfiring problems. I dont know, I am still learning, but just a suggestion that that may be whats wrong.

What is the condition of the coil pack? Has it been replaced as preventive maintenance.

I had rattling to. It end up being one of the heat shields on the converter pipe. I welded it and that was the end of that. Put the car on ramps and poke around the cat with a stick while its running. That's how I have solved many rattles on cars.

I just took it to a tranny shop and they found that the flywheel is cracked next to the flex plate. and that is what is causing the rattling. they want 650 to replace the flywheel...

You can't have a flywheel and flex plate at the same time. Cracked flex plates do happen from time to time though. You car is an automatic I assume?

yes it is an automatic. they said that the flywheel is cracked near the mounting bolts so a new flywheel would fix the problem.

new fly wheels cannot cost that much...my brothers was $108 for a 94 vw golf, so i assume one for a ford would be less.
