you can do this many ways, but here is what the real locksmiths do:

they basically have a device that can go down inbewteen the window and the outside of the door (through that little gasket seal) and then they basically pull on a little rod that unlocks the hatch. If you have taken an escort door apart you´d know exactly what it looks like. I´d scan in a pic of the breakdown, but I don´t have a scanner. Hayne´s manual 11-10 if anybody has a scanner and wants to help him out.

OK it´s actually quite easy to break into a scort. Get some sort of long flat piece of metal (aka slim jim) that can fit down between the window into the door. Now make a slight bend in the metal piece so when you stick it in there it curves towards the door. Stick it down the door right above the lock cylinder. DO THIS ON THE PASSENGER SIDE! You don´t wanna break the drivers lock if you mess up! Now wiggle it around inside the door and when you hit something, try to push it DOWN. There is a spot in there where you can push down and it will pop the lock. Hopefully that will help you a bit.

Yeah i know all about breaking the lock mechanism. I had to do this with my ranger and it broke the key hole. I cant unlock the door with a key anymore i gotta walk all the way around to the passenger side and unlock that door then reach in and pull the handle to unlock the driverside door walk all the way back around to get in and it sucks especially in this freakin weather.

I tryed to jimmy my Scort for an hour by trying to pull up on the lever. Pissed me off when I accedentally unlocked it putting the coat hanger back down in there after I rebent it.
