I'm about done with this car .It is a 96 escort with a 93 1.9. I had lose off power that i couldn't figure out. Then today coldest day thanksgiving battery went dead in morning got a jump . It only turned over hits a few times and keeps tryin to crank and won't start . YOU CAN SMELL GAS. Pulled #1 spark plug ,a little dirty (2 months old) and wet with gas.Cleaned all four plugs still the same . Don't know where to go from here. Only car wife has to go to doctor everyday. So I need it back up. How do I check for spark? PLEASE HELP

I would check to make sure the timing belt didn't snap. you can either take the nuts off the cover and pop it open to check, or take the oil cap off and shine a light in as someone cranks to see if everything is moving.

If your sure the timing belt is still timed correctly, and we know your getting fuel, you can check for spark by holding the plug base on a grounded peice of the motor.
Could just be flooded from all the messing around with a dead battery. Hold the gas pedal to the floor and let it crank for 30 second or so.

It's dark here now. Found a ride for wife tommorrow only . So i'm gonna check that spark tommorrow . Wouldn't holding it down that long flood it some more. Could the IACV do this and would CEL be on even if not running?

By checking for spark first.

With many fuel injected motor's, to dry it out from flooding you just let it crank with the gas pedal to the floor.

by using an ohmmeter set at 2kilohms. there's 3 terminals on the coil pack so remember that the middle terminal is the positive lead. if u put the negative lead of the meter on either other terminals and it's reading less than 0.4ohms, replace it.

What shapes the air filter in ?????

Had one do this once and the air filter was wet and cutting off all air to the engine. Short of that, I agree with the gang.

Hold the pedal down and crank it to clear the cylinders.

If it is running still, I would suggest a good set of wires. The Escort I had went through similar issues, plug wires make a big difference. If you can, have someone check the timing as well. While they are electronic ignition, the harmonic balancer is where the pickup reads the timing from. My car had a bad keyway and the timing was retarded.

plugs are two months old. I'll change wires when Iget paid . Any sugg. on GOOD cheaper ones
