97 2.0 SPI.
Any other motor will need tranny, axcel's, computer, wiring harness swap.
Junk yards around me sell them for about $275-300, but price varys with location.

You should be able to put in the GT motor if you want to. Need a good junkyard near you. The engine itself is readily available in lots of Mazdas if you can't find an Escort GT.

Personally I went with a Japer rebuilt 1.9L and it cost me $4000 installed.

IMO go with a 1.8 but keep all your 1.9 thingies like dont get a gt grill or whatever and build it up so people think its a stock lx.....then red to green your gone and there sitting there scratching there head

you got screwed on that swap
I second that. there's a lot you can do with 4 grand besides a rebuilt 1.9.
For exsample, the 2.0 for my LX was $300 w/40k, the 2.0 for my Pony was $275 w/30k. To turbo my Pony cost $1000.

In his original post he asked for a "easy" swap, to swap in a GT you will need a complete doner car, for the motor, tranny, axcels, computer, wireing harness and a bunch of misc under the hood.
For the 2.0 swap all you need is the motor.

Jasper engines aren't cheap. It was more than $1000 just to install it and slightly more than $2500 just for the engine. Then there is other parts and fluids and towing. If I could replace an engine myself I would, but I'm not into putting in a different engine or buying cheap rebuilt engines as I've heard nothing but horror stories about them. Generally speaking I do have expensive tastes in auto parts and I'm planning on keeping this car for at least 15 years and if I do it's certainly worth it. That and most of the junkyard engines already have over 100,000 miles on them so that didn't appear to be a good option at the time. Buying another Escort wasn't something I was considering at the time because it's too hard to find ones the exact same color and body style and with an automatic transmission, etc.
