need an answer

hey guys, i need an answer from ya all. i want to implement a user ranking system based on the number of posts. so here is the deal. number of stars goes from 1 to 5 so i need the number of posts to achieve a rank. ie:

1 star - 10 posts - rookie
2 stars - 25 posts - umm yeah
3 stars - 100 posts - duh
4 stars - 500 posts - something
5 stars - 1000000 posts - post whore

and along with the post requirements for the levels i need a "name" for each level. see above. so you all get the idea. lemme know your thoughts!

I think ranks are totally unnecessary and should not be implimented.

Nah. I don´t really think that the number of posts you have should really count for anything. After all *bump* counts as a post!

true.. i participate in the posts frequently everyday. that does not mean i POST frequently everyday, but i only give input to what knowledge i believe i can give, so i don´t believe the knowledgable 30 year old car mechanics should be raised above the 16 year old kids who just got a car and have little input cuz there dumb (ME

I guess I agree in questioning the need for or validity of a user ranking system.

For what it´s worth, everyone´s post count is up there for the world to see. What do we gain by adding a catchy name and some stars to this? The raw data speaks for itself.

Adding a rank makes it seem that those who post the most are wisest and most knowledgeable, but we all know that doesn´t necessarily follow. Maybe they are most committed to the site or to helping others out, or maybe they just have too much time on their hands. No offense to anyone, and you can lump me in the "over-posting" group if you like.

Just don´t call me a "post whore"!!!

Even though I feel that ranking is unnecessary and possibly misleading, I do feel that it is time to do something about the avatars:

Feoa.net as we all know is gaining new members daily and the traffic on the site is at an all-time peak.

I, along with others, have had my avatar "stolen" by new members. I understand that it is practical and reasonable for feoa.net to be frugile on server space and bandwidth and not allow uploading of pictures and avatars to the servers. However, I feel that hotlinking of avatars should be allowed, or possibly an el33t-ist incentive to paying members the ability to upload their avatar onto the main server. Just something like that.

Avatars are simply a matrix of 360 pixels of pure joy and excitement and really give a little uniqueness to the boards and deduct from the ubiquity of those goddamn ****** smileys that everybody hates.

I dunno about you guys, but I´d be more than willing to ditch my stupid ho of an avatar, wouldn´t you guys like something a little better too?

Siragen, I´m with you that a greater variety of Avatars would be a good thing, and agree that it´s pretty annoying when 2 or more peeps use the same one. So yeah, I´ll 2nd what you said.

I agree with ya siragan. i notice the avatar before the name half the time and when i see someone different with it, I am kinda thrown off for a second. So am i with ya on that.

And as for the ranking based on posts I must put a vote of nay in for that one. I don´t see how that can have any purpose. I mean a general question counts as a post. So I don´t think that it would really show knowledge.

My vote: Yay on the hotlinking of avatars, and Nay on the post issue, but you already knew that. Also, if we are able to hotlink avatars, I will be more than willing to help out and create some personalized avatars for some of our users if need be.

I just got a "photo editing program" *wink wink* and I´d be more than willing to help somebody out too if they want to send me a couple pics to downsize and stick their names in or something.

I think 100x100 would be a good avatar size limit so the board looks nice and uniform.

I vote for the avatars because i want something that other people cant have to make me different, and as for the rankings i say yes because it is mot like it really means anything it is just a little fun thing to have on the site. :-]

The only pics of my car i have that are online are on my website, and I had to scan them and i did two at a time so they´re paired up. www.cardomain.com/id/james92scort to look at my pos.

I have a TON more pics comin´ but I still need to use the rest of the film to get it developed. I have night pics of my fog lamps and headlights, side shots, front shots, rear shots interior, mileage turn overs, i for some reason, bought a 3 pack of film with 48 exposures each and i can´t even use one full roll. I need to take that into Meijer sometime soon. I´m going to swap out these yellow fog lamps with brighter ones because they use the same connectors and the holes are the same so i don´t have to drill again. plus these new lamps are slightly lighter in weight.

well let me know when you want it done and I´ll see what I can do. As of right now I really can´t make avatars for anybody because I don´t know what the dimensions will be if they do come into use, but I´m hoping for 100x100. 60x60 is too small, 80x80 is pretty standard, but 100x100 or 90x90 would be the best.

hell yeah avatars would be cool instead of these we have now. i have photo editing stuff too and i have made avatars, banners and other stuff too. most avatars are 80x80 tho...thats pretty much the standard
