Hey guys,
I´m considering putting a tach into my 95 Scort LX wagon, and I need to know what kinda of tach to put in. I´d like something that is first of all compatable, (has to be electronic), and I´d like something which:
.
  • is compatible (electronic)
  • Has a shift light indicator
  • Has backlighting for nighttime driving

I read up on Mike´s killer guide here:
http://members.tripod.com/sleeperscort/
so that helps a lot, but I still would like a relatively cheap tach with all the above characteristics.

I´d like to stay under 50 dollars.

Thanks.

Glad you liked the how-to. As for getting a tach with those features for ~$50, I would say try ebay. I got mine off there for about $45 brand new. I am not aware of any tachs with a shift light that are less than $50 retail.

I actually wouldn´t mind NOT getting a shif light at all. I definetly have the driving experience to hear and feel when I have to shift, but I just thought it would ...look cool
There, I said it! *phew!*

it´s all for the look! alright?!?!

Do you think you guys could possibly scavenge ebay to pick something that would work for me? Here´s a link to the gauges section of ebaymotors:

Thanks a lot guys, I really appreciate it.

i have a 96 base model escort. I had a prob with getting cheap tachs to wook for me on my car because of distributorless ignition system(aka coil pack). there are two ground leads to this system and only one tach lead from the tach and you cant tie the two togather i tried. car will not run. so i hooked up to one side and recieved half of a tach signalehich only indicated have of engine rpm. After much research i discovered that i needed a 1 pulse tach to be capable of a correct tach reading the only company i found was autometer that made such a tach. Ibought the autometer sport comp silver tach it has a shift light and is compatable with a dis system.

I´m not sure I get exatly what you´re saying. I thought you hooked it up to a lead in the EDIS module...
I´m confused. I always figured you hooked up your tach to this lead in the EDIS, then you made your ground the battery terminal.. made sense to me. What is this "half-signal" you´re talking about. I´m interested.

how i hooked up my tach

ok for whom this might concern i bought a sunpro tach for my 93 escort wagon and i couldnt find any advise or directions on how to exactly hook it up but the directions that came with the tach were wrong and claimed you need to splice the wire to the yellow/blue wire that didnt exist. on the EDIS control module by fusblock there are 12 pins numbers 10 and 12 control tach signal from ingnition coil in between at pin 11 is the clean tach output with no wire connected. what i did was put a solid core wire through that so it made contact with the pin and got a good signal. if you splice the 10 or 12 wire you will only get half the reading on your tach so that wont work. just insert a wire in the missing slot and tie it to the green wire from the tach and it should work like it did for me.

You need to find the EDIS module out of an Escort/Tracer that is compatible with a tachometer.

tach or no tach, the ignition control module does have a pin for the tach to get a proper signal like 93scortwag said.

yeah, EDIS module is the same on both tach and non-tach cars... difference is the wiring harness. Tap in and install a wire into pin 11 and you have a tach signal.

Am I mising something?

I didn't see anybody suggest the Escort Sport Panel that HAS the tach and the upshift AND a low fuel light that we don't have on the SW panel.

Mine is 1993 LX SW 1.9 and plain jane panel w/o tach.

If I had the time and money I'd be changing over to THAT, as I've seen some of ya'll do elsewhere.

Is this a big problem? I got the impression it is a task, but worthy?

If you desire a tach, it is worth it. Cluster removal is not that hard. I have done it so many times, I could probably do it blind-folded in less then ten minutes. I don't know 1.9L specifics; besides for having it out for the body swap, I have had it out several times to change the gauge color and upgrade the lighting.

That's what I thought; that's what I'D love to do..... RATHER than an aftermarket tach.

It's on my "wish list".
