I'm trying to figure out the name of the tube circled in red, mine is dry rotted, but I don't know what I'm looking for on rockauto.

I was never able to find any mention of that hose when searching at rockauto(dot)com. I know its a vent hose, to let crankcase fumes (during full throttle driving) escape into the air filter housing - from where they would be drawn into the intake system, and not 'pollute'.

I have and drive five 2nd gen Escort LX's. When that hose got spongy on each of mine, I replaced them with an equal length of old garden hose. I think it was the 5/8" i.d. size. My local emissions inspector in Virginia insisted I have a hose on the end of the valve cover vent outlet. The only reason I didnt use a length of 5/8" i.d. auto heater hose, was because the old garden hose was free.

Hard to beat free, but there is PCV vent hose that should be available by the foot at a good auto parts place. Presumably it will last longer.

I too have replaced them using the correct size heater hose. Not sure what the correct name is for it but I'd think something along the lines of crankcase ventilation hose.

What year is this Escort? The valve cover style looks like a 97 or 98, and the nipple on the cover would connect to the intake duct just before the throttle body thru a right-angle hose and a check valve. The line to the air housing would run from below the PCV valve connection on the front-driver corner of the engine to the lower air cleaner assy, again thru a (different) check valve.

The 1st check valve hose assy is discontinued and hard-to-find, and it looks like you have a homemade bypass. Any oil-resistant hose of the correct size would do.
