Alright so I am leaving after working my 11 hour day and just as everything is beginning to look better my escort is running like crap. Here's what it does: When I go it will act as if I am hitting the breaks or the engine is trying to cut out and at the same time it does this the "check engine" light comes on (this all lasts only for a second) but I watch the tach and the rpm's drop like 300-500 during everyone of these little seizures. I am going to go home tonight and see if my ignition is wet (it rained today) so I may need a new ignition. Here are my two questions:
1.) what else do you guys think it would be?
2.) how much will a new ignition cost, everyone from most expensive to cheapest and maybe some good choices to go with (msd?).
Thanks

well it sounds sorta like what mine went through. I had to change my Throttle control sensor...i belive. And it cost me about 100 bucks and was 10 minutes to change. My check engine light would last for about 5 seconds. You might want to take a look at that, my brothers boss said that happens alot with any ford...so that could be it, but b4 u go and change it. Take it up to auto zone or somewhere with a free diagnostic check. Your CPU should still have the tripped sensor code in it...

Sounds like the TPS (throttle position sensor) to me. My 89 LX was doing the similar thing but w/o the check engine light. The car even died on me going down the road once. I took it to my mechanic and he replaced the TPS for around 180.00. I don't know about the 2nd Gens but I was told that to replace the TPS on the 1st Gen you have to calibrate it. I have the CFI (central fuel injection) fuel system.

OK, i think i may be very lucky. I went home last night and my mom's boyfriend had something like this happen to him before so he lifted my hood, had me turn on the car, and turned off all the lights in my garage. We watched as almost all of the wires were arching all over the place. Tomorrow I am going to see if these wires had a warranty on them and if not I am just going to buy some cheap replacements and a distrubtor cap that way if it isn't the wires I wouldn't have spent too much on wires for no results. Is there any other reason why all the wires would be arching?
