    Need more information.

When you turn the key on, what happens? And noises, lights, or any signs of action? Is there any clicking?

Usually when you turn they key to the ON position, you'll hear the fuel pump prime (a little whurring noise) in the back. Do you hear that?

Also, with the key in the ON position (dash lights should be on), check if you have a light that says "Fuel Cut-off" lit up on your dash.

Is it an Escort with the automatic transmission? Or does it have the 5-speed transmission?
You should be able to turn on the headlights - and have them come on. Then turn on the ignition and have the small lights at the bottom of the instrument cluster come on. I mention doing this because the headlights use a different fused circuit than all of the rest of the things in the car. If the headlamps DONT come on - I would suspect a bad battery cable or connection. If the headlamps DO come on, I would suspect a bad ignition switch; because they are known to give grief -eventually-.

Also there are the interlocks to prevent the starter from cranking - and they are different for the automatic transmission versus the 5-speed transmission Escorts.
