My bad day :-(

So i was very excited today my fedex shipment came with my flex pipe so me and my brother could finish weilding up my custom exaust job. I have Pacesetter header. To a magnaflow universal exaust. With 2 1/4 piping thoughout. For the first time for any project with my car there was no hitch everything went well. Then we started the car!!! I know that exaust have to be worn in a little bit but this was the worst sound that i have ever heard. Well it wasnt bad till we hit the throttle. It was nice and deap at idle then after the throttle was hit i thought that someone by accident placed a CIVIC with a fart can in my garage. Hoping that it was just getting its first kinks worked out i drove it for a little bit. It was the most embarasing thing that I have ever done. I realised that i am driving exactly what i stand against. So we went out and bought a cheap cherry bomb resonator hoping that it would help out and fix that god awfull sound however to no avail. Then i tried to jsut drive for a while to break it in, hoping some carbon would build up in the pipes and damper the sound, I went on the highway and it was so loud that I coundnt even hear the live Linkin Park special (buy the CD ASAP). I guess that I will just have to break down and buy a Cat Converter so it can get rid of the sound. Well i just figured that I would bitch so that someone could maybe feel sorry for me or maybee offer words of wisdom on another route to fixing the problem. :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[

I actually just fixed my exhaust.

I bought the car second-hand, and the previous owner replaced the entire exhaust with the OEM parts.

Anyway, I drive my GT like I stole it, and as I was flying out of a turn, full throttle in 2nd gear, right at about 5400rpms, BAM!
My entire exhaust falls apart, splits right at the backside of the resonator.

Ah shit.

I car it back home at about 15mph because anything higher and it kills my ears. The thing was probably over 90dB it was fucking loud as all hell.

I head back home and think it over. I end up going to advance auto parts and getting an 18" secion of 1 7/8" galvanized steel exhaust pipe, two clamps, and some muffler "bandage". The grand total was like 9 bucks. Awesome.

I drive over to my homeslice´s pad and lift my GT up on the blocks and slide under it with a sawzall. Spend about 45 minutes with it and I finally make a clean cut though. My arms are like fire. I cut the resonator out and replace it with the new section of striaght 1 7/8" exhaust pipe. Then I put the bandage around the ends, and then clamp over everything. I drive it hard for about an hour and then I lift it again and check it out. The bandage sealed up any small openings perfectly (and the fit was super tight to begin with) and my torque was back! woot!

Sound was awesome. Really nice deep sound at idle, stays fairly subdued and low throughout 2500rpms, then begins to rise around 3500rpm+. Really nice sound signature overall. I liked it a lot.

I didnt dyno it or anything but the torque feels the same as stock (WAY better than with no resonator lol), and the sound is very nice. Not very loud, but pleasant.

The entire job took me about 3 hours, 11 dollars, and sore arms. I think it was well worth it and it saved me the insane price tag of an aftermarket exhaust system.

This cherry bomb.. did you place it midpipe coupled with the muffler or did you replace the muffler with it? This magnaflow, is it a straight through design?
I have almost the same setup you have, except I have a 1.9l. Pacesetter header, 2.25" pipe, and a magnaflow straight through muffler. It was loud as hell before I put a cat back on, and even now it´s still quite loud. It´s a deeper tone than most though so it´s ok though. I got a magnaflow stainless high-flow cat on ebay for $60 so I would check on there first if you´re gonna get one. But it won´t quiet it down an awful lot so don´t expect it to be much better than it is now.
do straight flow´s ´buzz´ more than a non-straight flow type? my dynomax superturbo is of the non-straight flow types (what´s the term?) and with 2.25 catback it sounds nice and throaty
Straight through styles don´t muffle the sound as much, so it comes out louder and you´re hearing more of the actual engine noise. Turbo mufflers and flowmasters (chambered style) allow more tuning of the sound but most can´t flow as much as a straight through design.
I just went out today and bought a new fart cannon,i got a toucan dual dtm. very nice . but unlike the rest of you i want it louder so im gettin the header and havin a custom 2 1/4 exhaust with no cat made for it.i got the muffler pretty cheap too. it was on sale for 124.00 , i got out the door paying 80 bucks.WOOHOO,any way the muffler sounds great, nice tone and a great backpressure rumble
well i had a even worst day i think i blew a head gasket im not that mechanically inclined at all but my dad says thats what he thinks it is and its gonna be anywhere from 500-1000 to fix so im thinking about hanging up the keys to the scort. Im not sure if it is a head gasket tho idk w/e bad days suck
I say drive it off a cliff, video tape it, and send it over to the honda civic forums.
yeh if ur head is f´ed...it will cost alot...if it was me, i´d replace it myself, but thats just cuz i refuse to pay for labor when i just take the time to do it myself.
Im about to drive it off a cliff with me in it. :-| :-| :-?
I know how you feel man. and changing that will be a pain in the arse. But giving up so easily is up to you. But, if you decide to junk it or keep it, I´m sure we´ll all support you. :)
and if u decide to junk it, i´ll be right there to tow it to the yard for u ;)
Let me break it down for you i am 16 its my first car it only has 30000 miles on it i have $140 to my name and a job that pays not well but pays so is it even possible for me to actually keep it and could it be anything other then a head when i start it it idles crazily and goes from like 1000 rpms to like 2500 so i rev it cuz i think its gonna stall and it smokes like crazy then when i drive it its fine and also when idiling it smells like nasty sweet stuff. any ideas?
Hey guys thanks for the responce and the concern. But my spirits have changed today my bro went to a pepbpys and picked up a high flow cat and we put that in with the resonator and now it sounds GREAT!!! better than any civic could. By the way it is a straight through magnaflow exaust. Escort sittinlow sorry to hear bout the head gasket that sucks man. Ok all i gtg :p

"Nasty sweet stuff" You´re cooking coolant. If you don´t have much money I´d say get your parents to help you and get a new or newer used car, or even another Escort if you´d even want one. The only problem is getting a new car you won´t have much money in the bank account for very long every month. :-(
yea but it only has 30000 on it and i love the car can it be fixed cheaply or relitevely cheap?
See if you can try another muffler. That´s probably your biggest issue right now. Good luck!

First off, if you even think you blew a head gasket, don´t drive it! Did you check your oil? If it´s frothy, it has coolant in it and yes, your gasket is probably gone. Is there a small shop that has a good rep you can take it to and have them take a quick look?

If it´s just the head gasket with no other damage it´s not even $500 to fix. But don´t skimp, buy new head bolts also. If they are like the older ones, they are designed to only be used once.
another thing...just cuz the mileage reads 30,000.... dont mean it has that unless ur sure...mine reads 68,000, but i know its actually 168,000...

another thing....Head gaskets, well to be honest, i´ve NEVEr heard of one blowing w/ that few of miles on it...

and finally, if u are positive its only got 30,000 on it...well guess what. Most factory warranties are something like years or months VS mileage. Check ur manual and see if the warranty mileage is over what u got. Cuz if ur mileage fits in the category, no matter how old it is, they gotta fix it. so second priorty besides not driving it is verify the true mileage. Check ur title cuz w/ cars that dont show over 100,000, there´s a "tamper" odometer rule on the title and if it says odometer has been tampered w/ then it means the car is prolly at 130 and not 30. but if it isint, then check the warranty stuff and hopefully ur mileage is covered and they will fix it.

Rule number one, dont stress over something when u havent looked at all the possibilities...
