Hey,

Thought that I'd throw this question out there and see what I get.

Was working on the car today, and noticed that I now have a hole in my muffler in the typical OEM escort location. As usual, the rest of the exhaust is O.K., just the muffler went. Naturally I whipped out the muffler cement and patched it up, it wasn't that big, but it needs to be replaced. So now I've got some time to see what to do about it.

Here's what I'm looking for:

OEM fit -> or light mods required to fit. Nothing major. Must fit OEM exhaust from cat to muffler.

Sound -> I like quiet. No Riced out POS Honda Civic sounding Junk. I drive a car, not a suped-up tractor.

Looks -> No biggie, but good looks never hurt. I'm used to an ugly OEM system.

Tip-> Would at least like a good looking tip. That means I need at least a 2" pipe out of the muffler, if a tip is not already on.

Price-> Just looking for ideas no matter what the cost.

--->Note<---
I already have a quote on a custom full stainless cat back exhaust with tip, so please don't suggest this again.

Any help, or attempts at help are much appreciated.

Thanks :D

Well, there is the pacesetter cat-back exhaust system, but from most people, I've heard that custom is the way to go...

While you're at it, it may be a good idea to get a good header if you have money to burn, like a genie header, and a new flex pipe, cat, along with the new exhaust. My car is a rusty pile, so I just did the ol' "ghettozaust", and it's swell. Right at about 4500rpms it has this wonderful rattling groaning sound when the seams of the muffler start to split, but that's another story...

Also, I think donnie is starting a busniess or something, and he was doing exhausts, so you may want to talk to him.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. As for the headers, I would love a set but it's a case of lack of time as opposed to money (imagine that 8O ). Can barely find time to change my oil 8O Not only that, but the stock manifold has the catalytic converter on it, which I need to pass emissions testing here in Ontario. That would mean the added expense of a new converter as well, plus the flex pipe like siragan mentioned. I'll save that one for the project scort I want to get some time.

Thanks again for the suggestions guys, and keep them coming

When my 1984 Escort GT needed a new muffler I just ordered a new exhaust from the dealer. It consisted of everything past the catalyst. I also bought some new hangars. I forget how much it cost but it was about the same price as one of those muffler shops charges for their crappy aftermarket muffler. And since the OEM one lasted something close to 9 years I figure that was plenty good enough.

I understand that you might be able to also get the whole exhaust thing as one unit at NAPA as well.

And my personal experience with those muffler repair kits is that the repair doesn't hold very long, like a week or so. That's why they aren't passible for most vehicle inspections with it.

Still thinking about what to do.

Does anyone have any experience with the pacesetter cat back. What are your comments on the quality of the product, and the overall sound. Was it worth what you paid for it, was everything smooth fitting and relatively easy to install :?: Good and bad comments welcome.

Also, who is Donnie and how can I get a hold of him.

Thanks,

I think the Donnie Siragan is refering to is actually named Matt and is know as EGTDude on here on FEOA. He is one of the head honchos here. Donnie is the other head honcho and goes by the handle Slapyo. Mat is in the process of starting an online performance shop, and there has been talk about a mandrel bent custom welded exhaust to be added to the inventory. I know the guy he has talked to about building the exhaust, and I will say that if he goes through with the idea it will be a top quiality system. But he is going through some family affairs that may last through July, and the guy he has talked to about the exshaust is on vacation till the 1st week of June, so it may be a bit of a wait, but well worth it I'm sure. If there is enough interest shown toward a custom 2gen and possably 1gen system maybe he can be convinced to bump up the production date.

When I replace my muffler I put a $14 Cherry Bomb on it. People say it is really loud, but loud is relitive when you are used to driving a V8 with dual exsaust and cherry bombs. I personally think it is a deep mellow tone, note a ricey R/C car or chain saw sound. I threw a $2 slant cut chrome tip on the end and called it good. Well almost good. I proceded to cut the exhaust pipe off at the first 90 degree bend before the gas tank, and stuck the Cherry bomb on the end of it pointing out toward the driverside of the car and placing the tip just forward of the left rear tire.
