I'm looking at doing this to my 626 at some point since the swap is pretty much the same. Also looking at messing with the gear ratios since I spin 4000rpm @ 80mph in 5th!!! 8O

what year is the 626? it has the taller gear that people put in the EGT transmissions.... but the 626 has a different final drive so overall it revs about the same as the EGT. i dont think theres any gear thats even more steep that could help you out.

    anyway!

    GTR/GTX:
    FD: 4.214
    1st: 3.454
    2nd: 1.833
    3rd: 1.310
    4th: 0.970
    5th: 0.717

    EGT/Protege LX:
    FD: 4.105
    1st: 3.307
    2nd: 1.833
    3rd: 1.310
    4th: 1.030
    5th: 0.795

so 2nd and 3rd are actually the same, but the change in the final drive is whats going to make the biggest difference i think. i believe the 626/MX6 gear ratios are similar to those of the GTX.

It's a 96 and the final drive is either a 4.105 or something like a 4.3xx depending on what literature you read. More then likely the 4.3xx since my rpms match that of the Probe guys and that's what they run. The plan is to hopefully stick the 4.105 final in and possibly try an SPI or Probe SE 5th gear since they should both fit and are a .717 Would definitely help the freeway cruise out. The other possibility is to run a festiva 5th which is supposed to be .69 but that might be a wee bit too small for my liking.

I'm skeptical as well but apparently they are supposed to work.

if anyone has any questions on the install send me an PM, i just finished the swap myself and feel pretty confident that i can help others.
also from what i have heard about the 626/mx-6 fifth gear swap is that with a stock EGT tranny if you were able to redline 5th then you would be doing about 145mph, with a EGT tranny with swaped 5th gear at redline you would be around 178mph. not sure of the ratio but thats the difference and the two 5th speed gears cost me a total of $215. could be found used at a JY for cheaper

I have heard of the axles breaking after adding the LSD. As I have seen the results of axle breaking at speed in FWD cars, not pretty as the car does an immeadiate turn into concrete barriers!!!!! And the driver broke bones! Not something I wanna try!

What is actually breaking? The CV Joint outer housing? The shaft? The tripod joint? Does anyone have pictures? What power adders are causing this, Turbo's? Has anyone had custom axles made to correct the issue?

I am in the market for a LSD for autocrossing to move into STX or FSP, track days and possible road racing in ITA with my 91 EGT. Any information can help!

ive never heard of axles breaking as a result of adding the lsd... sometimes they just break. i made about 40 passes at the drag strip last year at 260-275whp and i only broke one axle (my fault, had a brain fart doing my burnout and forgot to preload). that was on the stock diff.

i have an LSD now, no breakage yet... made i think 13 passes on it so far. i'm running GSP brand, brand new lifetime warranty axles from Advance auto parts. $70 a piece. much thicker than the stock axles.

anyway, when it did break, it was the shaft that broke. it twisted and shattered like 1/2" from the tripod end. it was an OE axle with ~110k miles on it.

I just finished an Install of the cheaper 2 way MSD LSD part Number GSY1-27-190. Does anyone know if this requires a friction modifier in the ATF FLuid? or does it need gear oil? I bought it second hand, new in box and have no further details.
