had a similar "gunpowder" like smell just after purchaseing my car in 2002 - re-torqueing the intake and exhaust manifolds solved the issue. The odor is carbon built up in the cat converter... it gets hit with steam at start-up from normal moisture accumulation after running and releases that sulfur like "gunpowder" smell.
