if the check engine light is on, run codes. they will point you toward the problem.

had a similar "gunpowder" like smell just after purchaseing my car in 2002 - re-torqueing the intake and exhaust manifolds solved the issue. The odor is carbon built up in the cat converter... it gets hit with steam at start-up from normal moisture accumulation after running and releases that sulfur like "gunpowder" smell.

bad idle and rotten egg smell? catalytic converter.

But an 02.... with a bad one? I'm pretty sure my 85 supra was still running on the original. Something had to have made it go bad.
