I can get a new master cylinder for 38$ or a rebuild kit for 16$. The Hayne's manual says the whole cylinder must be replaced if anything else except the piston and cup are damaged. What gives? Why would the spring, cup, spacer, piston and snap ring be available if it couldn't be rebuilt? Has anyone rebuilt their's? I know Hayne's isn't the end all of Escort knowledge, that's why I ask here. Thanks.

I would buy a new one, but not one that's made in China, which is probably what you are getting for $38. I would buy a Raybestos rebuilt one at Pep Boys before I bought a new one made in China or some other thirld world country. And I hate Pep Boys parts, but their Raybestos rebuilt calipers are OK and most likely the master cylinders. If you want a known good one, NAPA sells new ones for $114-$130 and rebuilt ones for $62. I would not put an autozone/Advance Auto, etc rebuilt or new Mater cylinder in my car.

Sorry guys. I should have been more specific. I meant a CLUTCH master cylinder. It would have been in the wheels/brakes/tires section if it weren't. :) From my research it looks like Advanced and Napa both sell Zoom/Perfection clutch master cylinders. Advanced is 38$. Napa is 23$. Looks like I'll go to Napa.
