I recently just became the owner of a 2001 Escort ZX2 and was looking for ways to "modernize" it, starting with swapping out the manual locks and manual windows with powered versions. I've dug through threads on this forum and other parts of the internet and while I'm like 99% sure i can on the locks (just need the actuators and a switch i believe), I'm not entirely sure on the windows (if i remember correctly i read you have to swap the window mechanism and get the same parts as for the locks). Just wanted to be 100% sure on both before i started work on anything.

Thanks in advance!

My escorts are all the 2nd gen LX kind, each of them bought for cheap when they were no longer running for their prior owners.. If any of them had electric windows, I would have passed them up; too many issue when the electrics begin to misbehave. But good luck with what you want to do.

Yeah powered windows aren't that much of a priority, but I figured if it was possible, while i was in the door panel doing other things then it might be worth looking in to.

There are universal power window retrofit kits that simply clamp onto the splines where your handle would go, they do require drilling and being cut to fit.

Power mirrors are the easiest thing to retrofit, I would like to do power door locks myself at some point along with RKE. However, I believe my security module will need to be swapped out as I don't think it supports RKE.

It's probably easier to swap in some power window regulators than it is to install one of those horrible aftermarket power window kits. Personally, I would check to see if the factory wiring is there. If it is then you might as well go to the junkyard and buy all the parts if you really want to add it.
If you don't have power door locks or RKE then you don't have a security module, period.

The first thing you need to do is figure out if your car is pre-wired for power windows. Pry out the wiring connector between the door and the car and see if there are a lot more wires on the car side than the door side. If so, then you can easily add power windows. You'll still need the door harnesses, power window motors, actuators, and the one touch down relay under the dash.

I would've thought so too, except that I can communicate with the security module with a scanner and there is one in the correct spot in the trunk. I don't disagree on the universal power window kits, they looked janky at best on a build I thought everything was really well done otherwise.

Then you probably have keyless entry. Turn the ignition from OFF to RUN 8 times within 10 seconds, with the 8th time ending in RUN. If the door locks cycle up and down then you have keyless entry.

Again, would have thought so too, but tried that!

I'll just have to take the door cards off and see what I have or don't have. Always possible something is broken or disconnected.

the remote keyless entry module is in the trunk on the passenger side. If there are two gray plugs with nothing plugged into them, then you don't have one, but can add one. it will be behind the felt liner.

Yup, that's the remote keyless entry box.

There is no antenna cable going to it though.
The antenna was only used on 97 and early 98 cars with the old style remote fobs. The later style remote keyless entry doesn't use the antenna.

Are the old fobs compatible? Maybe that's my problem.

Then again, I never got the door locks to cycle.

No, they are not compatible. You need the smaller ones with the rubber buttons.

It's identical to the slightly newer fobs, but it's from my 96 mustang. Either it's bad or it really isn't compatible.

I don't know what I did differently, but my car does in fact have RKE, locks cycled. Thanks for getting me to try again Matt and Pextor. Going to order a new fob tonight.

My son has dark grey interior and is thinking of swapping back to manual windows - my daughter wanted the power, so we converted a few years ago.
We have everything for both, but he can use a new driver side door panel for the manual windows.
