I have a 91 two door hatch back... how can I tell if it's a pony or not... Before the newb scolding begins... I tried searching for the anwser. So what makes an escort a pony?

Well, I've got stock am/fm, a/c, 13 in wheels, cloth (I think it used to be grey)upper part of the exterior, it dosn't say lx anywhere that i have seen, white paint, blue interrior, grey fenders, however, the drivers side of the front fender was held together with duct tape when i bought it due to a bad driver (you're gonna love this part) I pulled the tape off and used wood screws to secure all 'flappable' parts of the fender, didn't notice any ponyish thing. should I just assume that I have a pony?

They may have changed the Pony in the later years. My '88 didn't even come from the factory with an AM radio, no a/c, no p/s, no body side moldings and no bumper moldings. Nothing but car.

Run your VIN here: https://www.fleet.ford.com/maintenance/ ... efault.asp

That will tell you what trim level you have.

But you can basically tell if it's a Pony if you have the vinyl door cards (as opposed to the ugly cloth ones) and the Protege-style (open) arm rests on the doors. LX's had bigger arm rests with no open hole.

Most (but not all) Ponys had manual steering, no AC, deleted passenger mirror, no radio/speakers.

Other traits include no reflector strips in the rear, cloth/vinyl seats, no body mouldings, etc etc.

I personally think the Pony interior is the best of them all. Vinyl door cards > cloth door cards.

Post pics, we should be able to tell pretty quickly what it is.

Nope, I'm ridin' a full grown mare. I'ze got the ugly cloth panels. I kinda liked the idea of an 88 hp pony... that does 0-60 in under 3 min! I on't remember who's quote that is, but amongst the real world, I have stolen it and gotten quite a few laughs. Thank you for clearing up my confusion guys.

my 91 pony has radio, ac, ps, no side trim. oh and on the front fender it says PONY. also it comes with crappy 13in wheels.
My Texas 91 Pony has AC...but that is about all.
No power steering, no radio, no side or rear trim, no passenger side mirror.
It says Pony on the fenders and has a sticker in the drivers side rear window that says fuel saver.
This had a peculiar ratio manual transmission and the 13 inch wheels.
The wheels require smaller brakes and a different spindle than an LX.

My wiper control actually has an intermittant setting, but it is just a less than low speed and has just one setting.

No tach, manual drivers side mirror, reduced sound deadening were also part of the package.

I never got less than 33 mpg with the original transmission.....but with pizza delivery driving I still get better than 30 in town.
Consistantly knocks down better than 50 mpg on the highway.

My parts car Pony had an additional radiator fan that really helps in the Texas heat!
I have yet to find a manual passenger mirror so I installed a disconnected power mirror. Got a nice radio too!

yea i hated the manual driver side mirror so i got both powered mirrors but left disconnected. i figured all i had to do was connect them to the wires in the doors, not happening i have to run the wires to the switch so i gave up on it.

i had no clue the ponys had a dif tranny until Dave said so. so what is the dif between the pony and the lx trannys??
