I´m so sick of these asses at this same intersection. its the ones that the right lane dies off and it goes into one lane. i was in that right lane and when teh light turned green i had this lumina by a freakin car length, but as i was shifting to second he gained so much ground on me i couldn´t get over so i had to let him pass me. f*cking asses i hate people. i need a short throw shifter for this thing, it´s where i lose all my ground at.

ok you´re in first and when you go to shift into second, it doesn´t go in easily i have to pull it really hard because it feels like it´s getting stuck on something. then as i let off the clutch it pops in.

i don´t think a short throw will fix that. I drive a truck like that and it´s somthing with the clutch i think. or maybe the syncros are shot. But a short throw won´t help with that. All that does it make the throws closer together.

My friend Geoff has a lumina LTZ, with a 3.8L Series II. It whoops up on me until high gear. Once he grabs the supercharger for it I really wont have alot of hope.

I´ve got the Grand Prix GTP with the 3.8 Series II with supercharger. It´s got 280 lbs/ft torque. Blade, once your buddy gets his S/C, yep, there´s not a lot of hope.

this was a Lumina of the early to mid 90s, the boxy ones before they redesigned them to be big bubbles. I always liked Luminas, especially the LTZs. But I wanna actually have a chance against these guys.

A shorter throw means more effort. You shorten the distance between the end of the lever and the fulcrum, it means more force is require to move the lever.

If your problem is that you´re losing ground because it´s too hard to shift into second gear, then you´ve got a few things to consider other than the shifter distance.

Your engine is reving at say 7,000 rpm, and the next gear would like the transmission shaft to be at what? 4,000rpm? That´s a 3,000rpm difference, which is a lot for the syncros to try to force into the tranny´s shaft speed.

Get a lighter flywheel that will allow the engine to slow back down significantly closer to that 2nd gear rev mark during the shift and practice your double-clutching...

Or just don´t rev the engine so much in 1st gear. That 1-2 shift is the largest change in revs... on nearly every production car.

Shifting should always be a 2 step process. Once into neutral, and next into gear.. never jam them from one gear to another unless you´ve got a crash box (which don´t have syncros.. and big beefy gears).

That´s easy for you to say, beaverboy. Basically I´m not supposed to rev the engine to 7000 rpms? well then exactly how am I supposed to extract all 127 hp out of it since that occurs at 6500 rpm? what´s the point of having an engine that can rev that high if i can´t use it? That´d be like buying an S2000 to shift at 3000 rpms all the time (it redlines at 9000). if i shift into neutral and then into 2nd i´d lose more ground. The tranny is 11 yrs old, i don´t expect it to act perfect.

Beaverboy is right... but the tranny put into your escort was not made to be shifting while in the redline... a rebuild would maybe help your cause. I know going into third gear in my mx-3 is similiar to your problem when into the high rpm. The cause = poor synchro

sounds like you need some syncro work. I´ve never had a problem slamming gears at top RPM. sure you don´t want to drive it like that all the time but its never missed a beat.

Well maybe I can eventually find a GT 5 sp tranny in the junk yard as well. Plop that into my car all at the same time of getting a short throw shifter/ linkage.
