I wasn't sure if this was a drive-train prob or a steering prob, so I am putting it in both areas. Thanks in advance for any advice!
Okay, firtstly, I am a lousy mechanic. I bought this Escort ZX2 1.5 yrs. ago and have had a few problems, but nothing major. I've had a loud clunk noise when turning right (in the driver's side front end) and was especially bad when hitting a bump in a turn. I recently got all new brake system and the dude said I had a totally new front end installed before O bought it, but that they hadn't greased anything when installed. I had gone through a set of tires in like 4 months (outside of both front tires had steel belts showing.) I got an alignment and new tires. Still had a single clunk noise when turning right, usually under torque (like accelerating through turn, or when hitting a hard right turn on the interstate.) The noise isn't all that often, but persistant and scary. Okay, then last week, as I was backing out of a parking spot and turning right, I heard the clunk noise so loud, I think is echoed in the parking lot! As I drove home from work, I noticed that when changing lanes, the car veered QUICKLY into the next lane. I mean VERY quickly, almost like the tire angle is on a crazy inclination. I had a home-mechanic friend look at it and he found nothing. No play in wheel, drove in parking lot and CVs just click a tiny bit when at extreme wheel positions and hard torque. He said not to worry, but this AM on my way to work, I noticed that is seems to veer hard left and right after the car has down-shifted, just before it up-shifts. Any help would be much appreciated. My wife will make me drive this car until it explodes or I die ina wreck.
