It's a mazda 626 turbo! Can anybody tell me anything about this car at all? I never really took a good look at it since the boneyard was closing in 15 minutes and I needed to grab a part for the EGT, but I did get a chance to snap a few pics after tearing half the car apart just to get the hood open. Here they are: (click on the thumbnails for the full 1600x1200 pic)

The entire engine bay (12 valve, 2.2L turbo):

The intercooler:

The turbo! (everybody likes that) :)

I noticed that it has a VAF very similar to our VAF's, only instead of the "U-type" (like ours) or the "B-type" like the RX-7 turbos, it's a "K-type". It looks identical to the B-type RX-7 non-turbo VAF.
Is there anything I can pull off this 626 to put on my GT? Even if there were, I think the rust would keep me from doing it :)

you should pull that turbo for me and send me the exhaust housing cuz mine is cracked and totally worthless to me with out a new exhaust housing. that turbo is a rhb5 vj11 turbo also found on probes it will bolt up to the exp manifold and just about any ihi flange. it throws boost out at about 2300 on a 1.9 and is good for prolly 12 psi.

Siragan, if you want to use the turbo for something, I would pull the whole engine and take it home. Then you can get to what you need without being rushed and in the safety of your own home. Most of the rust that builds up on these junkyard pieces is scaly surface rust. Soak everything in PB blaster for a week and there shouldn't be any problems. Just remember the yard owners didn't pull the engine and turbo for a reason. Lug a battery in with you and find a car with some gas in the tank. At least try to run a compression test to find out why they left the engine in the car. then give the turbo a good look. yo may be buying one heck of a big expensive door stop. :D

I wasn't planning on pulling it out, but I may consider it depending on how hard the conversion would be.

Is the 626 a FWD, RWD, or AWD? I don't think I'm even close to ready to pull it, let alone re-do the mounts in my GT, and then find a new tranny, ECU, fuel pump, turbo timer, etc etc etc. That would be insanely expensuv and my GT is already a piece of **** anyways.

I just thought it was kinda cool and you guys might want to know about it. Maybe I could pull something nifty off of it and put it on my car, I dunno, but I agree, there must be something seriously wrong with the engine for it to be just sitting there. It's one of the very very few cars in the yard that are turbo'd.

The engines in those are POS's compared to the 1.8's in the EGT. I wouldn't waste my time with the engine itself. If the turbo is in good shape then maybe take that, but I think it's a vj5 which isn't the best turbo either.

oh...... i beg to differ..the engines in the 626 are pretty good, i used to own one till i totalled it. and the turbo edition has forged internals....

the reason they prolly didnt pull the engine is demand....to pull that engine means they would have to pay someone to do it...and i doubt the demand for a 626 is worth the pay for the engine pull.

Uhhh, yeah.

The 2.2L mazda engine is a POS? Put down the booze, man! That's probably one of the most durable engines Mazda has ever put out. I kow first hand, because my 1989 Probe has the very same motor, and she's running very strong after 248,000kms.

Well I doubt I have the tools or the experience to remove it, and chances are that there is something wrong with it. The car has been there for a while, and you can tell that it has has a lot of attention because most of the rest of the car is gutted out.

Either way, I've still got pics of it, I just dont have the ftp server space to host everything at once, so hit me up on AIM and I'd be more than happy to send them over.
