So I've had my escort not wanting to shift past second gear, while waiting for my VSS sensor I put a new valve body with low mileage shift noids in and changed the tranny fluid and filter... used mercon V. Anyway. I had to drive the car to my house which was 2 hours away. I figured I could cruise around 40mph and all would be fine. about 50 miles into the trip I start getting some slight knocking. I start looking for a place to pull over. about another mile down the road the knocking has gotten a lot worse. It has fresh oil and filter.

At idle the car is smooth and quite, only when revved does it start making noise. the sound seems to be coming from the side closest to the timing belt. Do you guys think I toasted the bottom end or did I drop a lifter? something of that sort? also do you think a VSS would let the car shift into 3rd and fourth? Its a 98 SE autotragic with 210,000 on the clock. I'll do anything to keep my baby running. If I left out any need to know info please ask and I'll do my best to answer. This forum has been extremely helpful

pull the valve cover and check all visible valvetrain components for breakage - be thorough on the inspection.... are you certain its not spark knock from a highly carboned piston? 50 miles would begin to light up carbon like a hunk of glowing charcoal, resulting in detonation.

Alright, So I picked up the car today. it fires right up and I drove it on the dolly. got it to the shop and it idles great. I even revved it a little... like 2000rpm and you could hardly make out any sounds. I'm going to pull the valve cover and maybe the head. Also about carbon build up, I sea foamed it about a week ago. I poured a pre-measured amount into each cylinder and let it sit for about 3 hours. So who knows about the carbon. More updates as I get time to work on it. Tomorrow morning I'm leaving for Atlanta, GA to go to G13.... Biggest F-body gathering in the south east. I'll be back on here monday, thanks for the help everyone
