Replaced fuel pump because of bad fuel sending unit - now leaking gasoline when filling up tank. Im going to check the gasket and lock ring connection again and the fuel line connections at the fuel pump. But I have another question - Where do the fuel lines that connect to the fuel pump attach to ?? Are the fuel lines hard plastic like at the fuel pump connection ? I have a feeling that those lines are leaking or broken and have no way to look at that connection now because I cannot get below the fuel tank now . Any input here would be helpful .. Thank you again ...

did you put some sort of silglyde or grease on the oring when you installed it? they tend to pinch and tear if not. the fuel lines go under the body of the vehicle. iirc they are plastic for a few feet, and bond into a metal pipe then back to plastic at firewall.

I will check O ring again and use grease as suggested - I am wondering about those fuel lines leaking and not at the gas tank - fuel does seem to be coming at the fuel tank connections though ..

There are also a couple of vent units on top of the tank that fit into rubbery grommets.
These grommets failed on my tank a couple years ago and I got new ones from Ford.

Went in and checked all with pump gaskets and fuel line connections at the pump again. Filled tank - and still leaking. I think the fuel line cracked or something down the line when I removed the lines at the pump because I cant see anything wrong at the top of the pump. It did not leak gasoline before I replaced the pump and now does ??? I really need to get the car in the air to look at from below ...

i just got under mine and looked.. the fuel lines exit the tank area and attach to the body just in front of the LR tire. they follow the brake lines all the way to the firewall. the only other thing down there is an evap line that follows the same path, and there are the fill neck hose and vent

I think I got a crack in the fuel line when I removed them for pump replacement - Im getting a lot of old 25 year old plastic breaking and cracking on my Escort now when doing any repair when I have to disconnect plastic things ...

Body and steel holding up fine with no rust at all - plastic is the thing that is not lasting well - exterior plastic and rubber parts the issue

Have you checked the gasket where the pump goes into the tank. I changed the pump on my '88 Pony one time to have a leak afterward. If I recall correctly I ended up taking the tank out from under the car again and putting the old gasket back in instead of the one that came with the new pump.

I have gone in now 3 times to check fuel pump gasket and fuel line connections and still leaking .. I am leaving overseas until December and will leave the car with this problem until I return, just not fill the gas tank to the point of leaking money all over the ground is the issue here really

Are you sure it's not the rubber portion of the filler neck? All three of my escorts had a badly cracked or leaky filler hose.

It's like $20 bucks on eBay. I used red RTV to buy me time on one I had for sale (disclosed EVERYTHING to new owner) worked fine for weeks idk if he replaced it.
