I looked up the specs and there 4 cylinder & 2.0L just like our 3rd gens but the Laser gets 140HP stock compared to my 110 and isnt that much heavier. Ive heard some1 hear say that our engines (2.0L SPI to be exact) are just underutilized and have alot more potential then say the Laser which puts out more HP but has less room for improvment. Whaddya think?

Re: the laser thing from earlier

Well why dont you just call up any place in australia that carries laser parts and order them up and make it that way yourself.

ummm sorry to say but I think your wrong. The Ford Laser specs can be found at www.edmunds.com also look for the eagle Talon which was sold untill 1998 which is its sister. They still sell eagle Talon parts & the engine is 2L not 1.8 So maybe Im wrong but where did you find out that it was a 1.8? Also the Eclipse uses the same engine. So im saying these are 2L and get 140HP and 130ft-lb and they are FWD not AWD. Like I said edmunds.com has all the specs

SpeedTracer, I'm pretty sure the Laser you're thinking of is the Plymouth Laser. It was a member of the DSM (Diamond Star Motors) family of sport compacts, which included the Mitsu Eclipse, Eagle Talon, and the aforementioned Laser. They all had the 4G63 powerplant (2.0L DOHC inline-four). Some were turbocharged, and some were turbo and AWD. I believe the Plymouth was discontinued in 1994 at the end of the first generation of DSM's.

I know of the Aussie Ford Laser, but read SpeedTracer's post right before mine and it should be obvious that he's thinking of the DSM Laser.

Wowzers were in a quagmire!!! Stupid international cars and what not. Yes I am refering to the Plymouth Laser not Ford. Thought the Ford Laser was a typo then when I came back and replied I said FORD LASER to!! So sorry for the confusion as I added to it too. But yea PLYMOUTH Laser Eagle Talon and Mitsu Eclipse all use 46G3 while the 95 and up use 420A(think the 420A grrr) But can someone please tell me whats the big diff between our 2.0LSPI @110HP and their 2.0L @140HP Sorry for confusion

Bore, stroke, efficiency, valve size, port size, intake mani, exh. mani, it's a combination of everything. The SPI, however, is more reliable than any DSM ever built. :)

the main difference is the other camshaft the Mistui engine has.

add to that the fact that the 2.0 SPI is a ford CVH engine, and isnt designed to rev much higher than 5500-6000 (its capable of 8k in race prep), and the mistu like most import engines is designed to make all its power way up high in the rpms...

the SPI we have has 2 intake ports instead of 1 per cylinder as well.

Nope, Nihil is right, the Laser that has the same engine as the Talon/Eclipse is the Plymouth Laser. It was for sure here in the states and I thought it was up in Canada too. The Australian Ford Laser (TX3 if I'm not mistaken) is the Australian counterpart to the Scort GT. I know that the TX3's are all Turbo and AWD, but there are also models called the KH, KA and KF that are different versions, but yeah the motors in those are the 1.8 from teh GT just turboed. Like a GTX/R just not quite as powerful I guess. never seen the enigines specific stats before, and I've never talked engines with a Laser owner.

Edit: I was chatting while typing this which is the cause of it responding to a previous post that is waaay up there...

depending on which year Laser you are referring to...the KF and KH were teh ones that had the BP and BP-T in them..the later models were based more on the Protege and Protege 5 models here with the 2.0l Mazda engine there may have been soem with a Ford motor also, but I have not seen any info on them yet...

Hay now, the only thing not reliable about the cars is the tranny, it does suck to have Traction, damn that AWD. :)
