That green light should light up with the key out and the driver door opened. And I think only for a few seconds to get your key in the hole. If you have a factory keyless system, hit the unlock on it or unlock your driver's door with the key and see if it comes on. It's not connected to the instrument lights at all.

The fuel cut off light is connected to the fuel crash cut off switch. If you ever hit a really hard bump or crash, the fuel cut off will trigger and you'll have to reset it. That's all that light is for.

So it wouldn't have any adverse effects if I put a bulb in that spot? And okay, I do not have a key fob, just keys I didn't try closing the driver's door though.

Nope. No adverse effects. For the green one, think dome light circuit

Assuming the "fue cutout" light space is for the fuel cutoff indicator function, I would want a bulb in it. I dont have my 1996 EVTM handy (its packed away in a box somewhere), so I cant advise whether your year of Escort still has that function. Generally if the manufacturer left a spot vacant, it was because that car did not have that function in it. If someone had swapped the cluster for another one - you will find that the clusters and their lights changed from year to year; for example between a 5-speed and an automatic, a hatchback to a wagon, etc.

I -think- the tiny light that shines a dim green next to the ignition switch, is driven by the same module as the chime. It is located inconveniently under the dash, visible if you have a mirror and a flashlight, and being located (at a guess) directly above the driver's left toe. If you have defeated the automatic seat belt on that door, or the dome light no longer comes on when you open the driver's door, then I think the dim green light also wont come on. It should come on anytime a front door is opened, and stay on for a minute or two. The switch on the driver's door latch has a role in making the chime module do its work. The door switches for the dome light seem to quit working on my Escorts, and I havent wanted to spend the money for new ones. Cleaning the old ones works sometimes, but they are still old switches.

With my 92LX I have gone over a bad enough pothole for the fuel cutoff switch to open and disable the car. The fuel cutoff light came on when I tried to start it, but the starter did not work. So I hopped out and depressed the red switch inside the passenger side of the trunk interior plastic - and the car worked fine afterward. It hasnt happened since.

Yeah that's why, drives side auto seat belt has been junk since I got it. Someone smacked it with a hammer so she's inop. I'll just be happy with the job I did with the cluster then and move on. It's the original cluster and mostly all of the bulbs were toast. Thanks for everyone's replies.

When I took out my cluster, I was concerned to about the missing light bulbs. When I look through the light, I could see that they were missing because those features were not on my vehicle.
