i can get a nice mazda engine, 1.8 BP from a jdm warehouse in canada here for about 1200 bucks. but, there is a 91 escort gt down the road from me for sale, wants 850, but im sure i could get it to 500 dollars. anyways, i have a budget of about 2300 bucks, should i buy a whole car, pull the engine, build it for turbo, or just get a BP engine and go that route. my goal is to build up an engine over the winter then swap it in the spring. car will be daily driven.

discuss....

BP ALL THE WAY! :D I love my BP, it holds up to turbo/more power a lot better than the 1.9 and has a lot more options! stock it's 130 hp the 1.9 is 88hp. it's more unique to turbo a 1.9, better to turbo a 1.8. just look at thereildeal's ride, self explanatory what you can do with a BP.

you could get a junkyard BP and rebuild it for less than the JDM 1200 dollar engine. I rebuilt a 1.9 for about 700 dollars, rings, crank reman, lifters, all that fun stuff, oil pump.

personally I'd go BP for a nice powerful daily driver! up to you though it's gonna be your car make it YOURS!

*edit* also the 91 EGT will come with a BP in it, it's just got a ford valve cover but it is a mazda! so just buy the car and rebuild the motor that is in it!!! you won't regret buying an EGT trust me!

It really depends on what you want out of the engine. look to see how many miles are on the 91 EGT. if you want to go turbo, its really not going to matter which one you get if you are deciding to rebuild it. both should equally hold up under boost quite well. now if you want to jump up you can get a GTX engine for around 1300 to 1500, comes with turbo, ecu, wiring and trans. only thing is comes with AWD trans. Or you could get a GTR engine. same as above but trans is FWD i believe. like i said it really matters in what you want. some will say GTX/GTR swap others will say build and turbo the NA bp. with 2300 to spend you have a lot of options.

great thanks for the info. still learning these cars, so it is a bp engine in the escort gt already? 1.8L mazda? im thinking of gettint the whole other car, then i have a nice parts car with extra drivetrain.

i like the idea of rebuilding the bp, escort92man, did you turbo yours, what kind of parts would be needed to do it, like a turbo manifold, turbo ect..

thanks guys

If it has the "long" crank, it will be more than fine. The only difference between the Mazda and "ford" BPs are the valve covers. I have a '91 GT with the BP, and I don't know what crank it has. I have 190,000 hard miles on non-turbo engine and head gasket and have never had a problem with the engine itself. I have replaced a few timing belts and valve cover gaskets, but that's it.

Identical?

The block I am building right now (which I pulled from a mazda at the JY) had a girdle/windage tray, and this nice aluminum oil pan with little fins on it (which I am in the process of polishing right now)

The motor which is still in my escort has a stamped oil pan, and when I pull the motor I will check to see if it has the main girdle as well, I read somewhere that the ford did not have one.

But I will assume your right.

all BPs have aluminum oil pans

there were BP crank nose failures, heck there was even a guy on this forum who had his fail. he bought it brand new in 91!

the failures are more documented in the B6 DOHC 1.6 of the early miata which shared the same issue. people were more likely to find the issue and try to fix it in a miata, rather than in an escort where most people say "ah fuck it" and junk it.

The escort I am driving right now has a stamped steel oil pan. I would guess a replacement. the aluminum pan is going to look bitching after I polish it.

I pressure washed it, steam cleaned the small areas I missed and then hit it with some brakleen, I am going to hit it with some buffs and compound and see what I come back with.
