I have just got a 93´ Escort LX Wagon. After about 2 months the head has cracked. I am wanting to install the J-spec 1.8L T4cyl (BPturbo) w/approx 210hp (from GTR) in the car. I can get the engine from Cork Sport for around $1900. I would like to know if I could put it with out any trouble? Would I have to get a GT trans. or could I keep the 5 speed that I have now? What be a good clutch? Would the 1.9L engine mounts work or will I have to get them from a 1.8L GT? I think that all that I would need after that is the ECU. Do you think that it would be worth the money and time? Where would I find a good intercooler and wastgate? How much boost could I get with out getting into any trouble? My other plans for the car goes as so: adjustable coillovers, high flow catback, K&N filter (maybe a custom ram air hood), entercooler, (maybe nosi), big mouth frount bumper from an accord, 17" wheels, weight reduction, rasing seats, five pionts, short through shifter, sway bars, and tower braces (frount and rear). If you think that I have left any thing out please let me know. My town is full of stangs and imports. I want to scare the hell out of themwith this sleeper. Below is a pic of the engine.

Ok good choice, I´ve heard the 1.8 can put out as much as 14 psi boost on the stock internals, thanks to Mazda putting in forged internals. However, doing the swap would require a LOT of time, effort and money. You´d need a 5 sp from an Escort GT which would bolt right up, but the one from your 1.9 won´t work. You´d need the ECU, upgrade the fuel delivery (pump, lines, the works). if you get the GTX engine off corksport it should come with a turbo/wastegate on it already, or am I mistaken?? I guess that´s something you´ll have to ask when you purchase it. You can get an intercooler from a Chrysler Conquest I believe. Get a B&M short throw shifter, go with the ram air and just modify the airbox that should come with the 1.8. putting a filter charger on there will more than likely drop the already pathetic low end of the 1.8.

What year from the accord did you plan on takin the bumper from? I don´t think an accord will work...too wide. but an early 90s CRX bumper will work. Hope this helps, and btw welcome to FEOA and the world of Escorts ;-)

I was told that athe bumper from 90-93 would work with a few little mods done to it. Maybe I was told wrong. I can get the same bumper for a CRX thow. Thanks for the help James.

first off the GTR engine is darn near impossible to get. The GTX with 180HP is very easy to get though. You will want to get essentially everything that connects to the engine, CV´s, tranny, etc etc etc corksport could probably tell you everything that you need. I would suggest going with a cone filter... not gonna lose bottom end on a turbo! :) also get a better fueld pump walbro makes very nice ones for cheap. They are very easy to put in. with upping the boost and having the fuel available you could match the GTR stock output without much work. You will want the GTX ECU as well as boost guage, EGT guage, a fuel pressure guage wouldn´t hurt either.

go to barely legal transplants.com and he has a conversion list of everything you need to swap it over! a gtr has been known to run as much as 25lbs of boost with 325 at the wheels! a gtx can do 175-180 at the wheels real nicely! and is way cheeper and easier to get hols of! less waijt time by far.

the GTX is 180 stock. With the right ignition control (IE not stock) you could probably get away with almost as much as the GTR. Keep in mind the turbo probably won´t be able to boost that far. 15PSI is about max from what I hear. It just can´t flow enough to go beyond that.

Okay, I know everyone else above probably already said this but heres a piece of reality:

The GTR...you´re not going to get it. Its almost impossible to find.

The 1.9L and 1.8L have Nothing in common. The trans wont work, the rack and pinion wont work, the halfshafts wont work, the suspension shouldnt be a prob though.

You´ll need a complete wiring harness (everything under the dash too.)

You´ll need to get new sensors for the 1.8L (that plug into the harness)

Your mounts wont work....you´ll need to buy all new ones.

Then you get to start on the intricacies of adding a turbo. The BPT shouldnt be that much of a challenge if your using everything from a BPT, but you´re going to want to expand you list of gauges. Boost, EGT or Air/Fuel, fuel pressure is pretty important too.

You´re 1.9L fuel system wont handle it, so you´ll need a new intake pump, if you can actually get a complete BPT you wont have to worry about fpr because it will be set up for the turbo...if not, look into fuel computers

Like wise ignition, the BPT ECU should handle timing retard under boost, but since corksport couldnt get me one, you´ll need an MSD or Jacobs set up to get the job done.

Sorry to say it pessimistically....its just more then "dropping it in"

Sorry, I´m new. What are y´all talking about when you say the GTX and GTR engines? I´m assuming it´s mazda, but which vehicle?

Thanks, I know I´m stoopid.

bpt = bp turbo = gtx = the 1.8L mazda BP engine (stock in the 2nd gen gt´s) with a turbo.

the gtr is like a souped up version of the bpt motor. It´s impossible to get.

I run my GT on the special C-spec (canadian spec) GPX motor. It has no pistons or cylinders and is more like a rotary. It runs on gerbils. I currently am pushing about 120GP, or 120 gerbil power, and hope to hop up to about 180GP with the GT kit, or gerbil turbo if you will.
This motor is exceedingly rare and extremely desireable due to low emissions and excessive power. The frame twisted coming off the line cause I was pushin so many ´bils.

i hear hamsters are a sw33t sw4p for the C-spec, just a take-out-put-in procedure. they only run on lean hamster-fuel though, can´t be fattening.

When you exercise you burn off calories and sweat, turning fat into muscle...the fatter the gerbils you get the more lean mean runnin´ machines they´ll become! No one will be able to catch your Escort then. :-]

Siragan really should consider switching to a hybrid fuel type - running gas regularly and moving to methane for long trips.

The GTR´s are not IMPOSSIBLE to get....they are very hard but not impossible. There were 2500 made. 2300 were put in the GTR and 200 were put in GTae´s (same as GTR but predone out for Rally). For a whole front clip it will run you about 3000 or so....that includes engine, tranny, ecu, and harness.....
