I know that there's a version of the 1.9L that was produced only in Mexico that is more powerful than the normal 1.9L. Does anyone know what the vin number engine number would be?

I have my car and I know it isn't, but my friend's vin is 3fapp13j8nr104172.

just because the vehicle was made in mexico doesnt mean it got the mexican fleet 1.9 (only the cylinder head is said to be different).

its actually in fleet use in all of South America. most 2nd gens were at least partially manufactured in mexico, canada, japan, and final assembled in Detroit.

vin code is K if i remember right.

i am currently located on the us - mexico border, and i mean right on the border, i can even walk over there right now.
i can ask around see if its true, but i have never heard of that myself.
if i find out anything, i will post a reply.

Son of a!!!!! Each time I check my codes at Shucks I enter J as my vin code and it always came back saying it was K. Should have kept the 1.9 I guess. Maybe my friend still has the motor since I gave it to him. Oh well the SPI is nice. 8)

well I know you have to have the head from the mexican market escort, searches on the internet havnt brought up info on how different the car is feature wise but I do know that it has a better cam and valves. Im sure even a short walk over the border you might find the right engine but the best bet would be to go at least a hundred miles in where the prices would be cheaper.

if your 1.9 was really SA spec, im sure you would have noticed little to no difference in swapping to the SPI. the SA 1.9 is said to have nearly the same hp level.

Well I didn't notice a huge increase but an increase none the less. The 1.9 had a more liner powerband with an awsome kick at 4000rpm where as the SPI comes alive at 3500rpm. Dunno?
