New FMU????
Yes the 97 2.0 SPI Escort motor will pretty much bolt in, you don´t need to change harness or computer. You dont need a FMU unless you put a turbo on that thing.

thanks every one it looks like the 2.0 will be my plan. Now I guss it is time to look for performance mods for the 2.0 Is the 2.0 spi pretty much the same as the one in the Focus. If so the great things will happen for this little wagon.

What year is your LX???? If it is newer than 96, then the 2.0 SPI might be the best way to go. If it is 95 or older I would suggest a 1st gen GT engine. The reason being is the 96 and newer LX cars are equiped with OBDII and the 2.0 SPI was only in OBDII cars, where as the 95 and older were OBDI and so was the 1st Gen. although converting from an OBDI to OBDII system is nice because the OBDII is easier to diagnose (If you have an OBDII scanner) it will require a lot more rewiring than if you stayed with an OBDI system. You will have to do some rewiring one way or the other due to the fact that the SPI has extra wiring to control the split port system, or if you go the other rout you will have to figure out how to hook the distributor up from on the 1st gen engine. Well I guess you could actually keep the EDIS (Electronic Distributorless Ignition System) and put a freeze plug into the distributor hole on the 1st Gen head. But you would have to make sure and use the crank pully from the 2nd gen and the Crank Positon Sensor. I could go on for a while about the possability of both swaps, but the main concern is the crossing from one OBD to the other. If you have anymore questions let me know.

If your escort was newer than 96 than it would allready have a 2.0 SPI, 96 was the only year of OBD2 with a 1.9. 97+ is 2.0 SPI.
For 91-95 escorts the SPI would still be easyer than swapping to a first gen motor. You do NOT have to rewire any thing just because the 97 SPI is used in a OBD2 car. But you will have to reuse some of your old sensors, just unscrew the old sensors and put them on new motor. Yes the 91-95 computer will run it.
Dont worry about the IMRC (secondaries) it only one wire. (and a ground) It would be a lot easyer than tryng to make the 91-95 computer try to run a distribitor ignition. Plus first gens have the starter in different locations, use differnt trannys, and the mounts are tilted at differnt angles.

Please read the "how to".

96 Escort LX "Hybrid"
2 Door, 5 Speed
2.0 SPI, Custom SPI Controller
1st Gen Header, Pacesetter cat back
Super Chip, CAI, UDP.....
