In hindsight...... Back around the time that my fuel mileage really fell off, it seemed that the all-too-common 1/4 tank, hard right turn fuel starvation got a LOT worse. The coughing and bucking would even start @ 1/2 tank. The severity had gotten worse too - to the point of nearly shutting the car off - A bad thing to happen at the top of a interstate ramp.
I knew my mileage had fallen, and was likely due to a bad O2 (also had an O2 code), so I finally replaced the sensor a couple of weeks ago. It dawned on me just before my last fill-up that the 1/4 tank gasping/coughing was no longer there.
Maybe a fluke on the last tank? Maybe something 'shifted' with the fuel sending unit......Maybe the O2 replacement had some bearing on how the motor runs when starved for fuel? I'll keep an eye on it when this tank gets low again, and make sure it's not a fluke....or my imagination.
