I have heard of some people taking out the silencer box in between the maf and the TB. I want to take it out because it seems like it ristrics air flow. What do you do to the hose that comes out from the bottom of the box. I know that the valve cover has a ventilation hose that goes in from the intake and that you could put a little filter on it. Could I just put a filter on the valve cover that way I just get rid of the silencer box that way i could connect the hose from the silencer box to where the valve cover hose use to be. If anybody has sugestions just tell me. thanks!

you´re talking about cutting the air resonator box inbetween the "true" intake and the filter, not between the maf and the manifold.

All you need to do is get a K&N valve cover filter and bodge it on. Simple.

There is a resonator box that has the hose that hooks to your IAC valve on the 1.8L. It´s just after the VAF. I found a Miata site that actually dyno´d removing that box for the 1.8L

They found that by LEAVING it you gain 4ft-lbs of torque from 3-4k rpms.

the air resonator box aids in quieter operation, and the IAC hose thing leads into the side of it where it runs through a small foam filter.

the air resonator box also helps to keep dirt and stuff out from contact from the air filter or something.

I think he means the sqare silencer that´s immediately downstream of the MAF, not the plumbing upstream of the Filter housing.

I heard you HAVE TO remove that square thing and reposition the MAF housing into the space previously occupied by the square thing, in order to fit a cone filter with its adapter. I don´t know if it´s true. I don´t know what to do with the tube, but I guess I would find a way to keep it by relocating a fitting or something.

I still have my silencer box and I have a cone filter (and a turbo for that matter
) Still works like gravy (just not glowing kind they have at my school).

Yeah that box just silences the air but apparently its slows down the airspeed enough to keep torque between 3-4k revs. Dyno-proven. Still the thing isn´t a big deal. I only kept it because it was easier to make the hose that goes to the compressor side of the turbo by keeping it.

Hey, does the 1.9L engine have this silencer box too, or only the 1.8L?
I know the 1.8L has a VAF while the 1.9L has a MAF. Right?

What ever happened to the ´good ole days´ of an air cleaner right on top of the carb?

Yes, I remember carbueration
I had a Geo Metro with a carbuerator. it was so easy to pull off the top to replace the air filter, now it takes muscles to pull the top of the air filter box of my EGT up to get the filter out without tearing it
Oh well, Fuel injection works wonders on increasing horsepower anyway, I´ll take E.F.I. anyday

Hey guys, I tried doing the stock intake and putting a Cone air filter and for one reason or the other it didn´t work. But while i was doing that i had to cut my stock intake tube....so my real question is does anyone have an extra intake tube in good condition for a 1.8L. And how much would it cost me? I just went ahead and bought a K&N High Flow air filter. and i´m putting the box back in...until i figure out what i did wrong.
