Hey I was wondering if anyone could lend a suggestion. I recently bought a High flow air filter and maf adaptor for my 1.8. I took out the air box and replaced it with the High flow filter but left the stock intake tube. The only problem is now my vehicle has too much air going into it and it is shutting off almost chocking. I have reset the computer and I made sure that the VAF is positioned correctly do you know what I´m doing wrong or am I missing something? I would appreciate anyones help in this matter.

Hey JayJay, sounds like you might have a leak. any sort of Vac leak after the VAF will cause a scort to die and possibly not start.

I did the same thing. I took the stock box off of the VAF and put the adapter plate on. Then put the filter on that. My intake piping is actually all different now, but I know it would work with the stock hose and everything.

Wait, just thought, did you hook up your IAC valve again ? Its a hose that goes from the square box after the VAF to just under the Throttlebody?

check for leaks though...when you moved the hose it might have opened a crack up.

Thanks for the advise i´ll let you know how it works out. I really would like to get this problem fixed, I´m headed to the Desoto Speedway this friday to race my car.
I´m only a beginner at this but my friend has a 95 civic with the same mod´s that i do (intake & exhaust). We have raced on the streets before and he never beats me, so we´ve decided to go test it on the tracks.
Were going to race the 1/4 & 1/8. This will also give me a chance to see what my track times are and what my Scort is really made of.....

Ok, I know i´m not ignorant but maybe i´m missing something here. I checked my intake tube and it was broken so I went to the auto shop and they told me that they don´t carry intake tubes for my 1.8. So I explained to them what I was doing and they told me that I can´t install a High flow filter to my stock intake system. Does anyone have a picture of what it looks like installed or detailed instructions on how to install this.

Well the guy at the store doesn´t know what he´s talking about. I know A LOT of people who run a cone filter on their stock tube and it is fine. There´s no reason it shouldn´t work. Now since you´ve found your tube to be broken, you should either make a new one yourself or get one bent up at a muffler shop. There´s not many companies that make a tube for the 1.8 so that´s why I suggest making one. Try to get some stainless mandrel bent exhaust pieces made as an intake tube, or just buy some pre-bent and cut it up and make it work. You could also go to the junkyard and snag a different tube. A quick and easy temporary fix for your tube is good ´ol duct tape. It should hold up until you can at least get a new tube. Hope this helps a bit.

If I break my head getting this thing together you better believe when I get done the auto parts guy will be the first to show.
So does anyone have a picture of a cold air installed on a 1.8? i´ve looked around and I don´t seem to see any pictures of a 1.8 with custom intake.

NOT MY CAR! But here´s a pic of a 1.8 with a painted tube and a cone filter for you. I have another pic (also not my car) of another with a custom intake tube as well, I´ll find it for ya.

Speaking of intake, I just got a K&N filter with an adapter which I believe fits it to the stock intake tube on my 1.9L. It´s not a cone filter, or at least it´s not cone, shaped. It´s not flat like the stock filter that fits in the airbox. My assumption is it´s meant to be installed in place of the airbox, because the airbox is too small to contain it.

This brings up some questions:

I know the airbox draws air from the bottom where the air is cooler. If I just stick the filter up there in its place, won´t it draw hotter air killing any HP gain?

What about the sensor(?) that plugs into it. I mean there´s something with a wire coming out of it. If I ditch the airbox, what do I do with this?

How can I get colder air into my new filter? Is there something available which fits my car (94 1.9L), or do I need to fabricate something like 91sleeper? Would this involve fabricating a larger airbox to house my new, larger filter?

Any answers would be greatly appreciated!!!

I know what you´re talking about... that little orange ball thingy. If you were to put in a new air filter, I´d probably drill a hole somewhere in the new filter where the air flow is about the same.

My guess is that that is a type of resistor, and if more air passes over it, the resistance changes, so you´d want to put it in a place where the air flow would be similar to the stock configuration. I was originally thinking of the intake tube, but the air flow would be faster there and may give a different reading.

Maybe I´m completely wrong.

And I want to put a new intake on my 95 LX, but I too have the problem of taking air from the cab, where it is warmer. If you take out the airbox, you see a tube running in this weird convoluted path. I think it diverges into two paths, one running near the front left headlight, and the other one seems to run near the base of the radiator somehwere. Kinda weird.

haha, *custom* intake.
I just tell everyone I race I have extreme Intake and Exhaust mods. And when they hear it blow off the look on their face. I love ignorant Honda owners that work at auto parts shops.."They dont make turbo kits for Escorts" Thats the big laugh. I think its the main reason why my car club loves having me around.

Thanks for the pic, any little bit helps. I´m just waiting for the weekend to go to the junkyard and get another intake tube and then retry my install. If anyone has anyother suggestions they would be appreciated.
