Hi Josh yes first thing you do is scrap it and get a better car.... haha just joking. no firsth things you would probably wanna do are performance. Why make it look nice on the outside with nothing to show for it on the inside.
since it is an 89 you are probably running the 1.9L (just a guess).
Since you said LX I am assuming it is either a 2dr or 4dr. Stock means you would be running 90hp unless its a GT (your car will state if its a GT or an LX) you will be running on 110 hp stock.
but yea match your car performance wise first (its ok to do a lil bit of upgrading to the outside once in a while too) make the car a sleeper

But thats just my advice. I have a 1995 Ford Escort LX and all I have to show on the outside is a 24.99 exaust tip from autozone and some rims lol thats it but on the inside I have an intake (bout to get a new rally series clutch) with an awesome sound system with 2 12" subs running off a 1000watt amp
See its always fun to destroy people in some stuff. I had a guy in one of the scion XB who was right next to me, now I was minding my own buisness but when he turned up his music loud he looked at me and laughed.... thats of course when i just blasted my subs and he looked forward and rolled up his window. I just laughed and went on my way.
So having a sleeper makes it fun for you and embarrasses the crap out of the other person.
But point is sleeper. performance first
